The only other possibility we thought about was having direct ADC connections for external sensor logging, but since our case does not have any open slots, its not really realistic to do. Unfortunately not all J2534 tools support the required VPW OBD2 protocol, and ontop of that, alot of them don't support the highspeed either.

I am one of the developers of OBDX Pro scan tools, our GT and VX tools both support VPW, along with supporting J2534.
