Have you checked the basics? Fuel filter? Pump will be nice and quiet unless it's the sock filter.

haven't checked filter yet, it free revs to 6000rpm no drama, only does it when in gear or has load against the motor

Ok guys all sorted now. Turns out I had busted engine mounts and the engine was twisting and squashing the main starter cable and causing a missive short

Boy that would have been a fun diagnosis. I can imagine the sparks under the bonnet and the load on the battery and alternator. GOOD WORK.

yeah was scratching my head for a while, figured it was shorting or loosing the earth but wasn't expecting that
