Car missed quite violently when data logging OBD2

Post by Charlescrown »

Just wondering if anyone has come across this problem. My car Hyundai I30 CRDI misses very violently when trying to log data via the OBD2 port. I have tried quiet a few software programs and devices and it plays up with all of them. I have never had this problem using the devices on any other car. It seems to be caused by the data flow but I am at wits end and running out of ideas.

Do the programs show how fast they are recording?

Any idea if the programs are telling the rest of the car to "shutup" which could be causing a lack of communication in the car between modules?.

I wouldnt imagine logging would be a major strain on the ECU... but.. maybe its too much for it?

I did see this 15 yeas ago on another product when I worked in OEM land.
Turns out when we were logging it was overloading the ECU causing it to restart/reboot. Every time it happened sent a shock through the car as ECU restarted. Was happening about once every couple of minutes so took a while to eliminate everything else.

Don't know Tazzi but if that were the case it would do it on other cars I would think. Yoda you might have something there. From the symptom you described it's a lot like that. Very violent cutout sometimes almost as if someone hit the brakes then it's back to normal. I might try reducing the amount of data and possibly the vehicle speed first because it only does it when driving.

I have had some success. I went back to using OBDwiz and found a dwell setting. Not too sure what it is but guess it's like buffering. Anyway I set it for the longest time-frame and it fixed the problem and the car runs and logs fine.

Unless you are fuzzing and sending random spurious commands that get accepted this sounds like a flaw in the PCM code to me!

You aren't sending ECU reset or anything like that by mistake are you? Can you post up what commands you are sending whilst datalogging?

If I knew how to do that I would.

Oh right I just assume you were writing your own software as it was on this forum. You are using other peoples software?

Yea I have tried a lot of OBD2 programs and they all do it. As I said the dwell setting is the only thing I found to have any effect. Really bugs me.
