And further to what charlay86 mentioned another reason is that the dwell time of CDI systems is very very short so you can get more in, it takes a few ms to get a reasonable spark from an inductive coil so wouldnt get very many sparks in before its all too late. Multiple spark does exist on some inductive systems but its only at low RPMs, pretty much once your off idle it goes back to one spark.

That's interesting about the longer burn time, something to think about.
Did you know MSD deliver 480 volts to the coil primary winding.

Sorry for the useless information just that I've been reading up on them for an install on a mate's car.

Yeah that is how CDI systems work, they use a coil with much lower inductance, and that makes it necessary to drive it with a higher voltage. The lower inductance is the reason for the reduced burn time.

Would that also mean if you had a standard Commodore V8 ignition system (VN V8) and fitted the MSD coil, you would reduce the burn time?

No you need to drive a CDI coil with a CDI driver to reduce the burn and dwell times. MSD make coils that can deliver more spark and do have some that will do multiple sparks.

That's ok, I have a Blaster 2 coil on my VR thinking I'd get a better spark. Was thinking the opposite might of happen.

VL,

Been reading w great interest re: your ignition module. Here in the States, a number of us with the
LT-5 DIS have been looking for a alternative to the unique ignition module used in that system. It's not repairable or rebuildable. Additionally, the LT-5 makes power right up to 7k and we'd like to use the individual coil setup to take advantage of that higher power peak. Some are adapting forced induction to the LT-5 and the hotter spark from the LS coils would come in handy. Any interest in working w us on this?
