I've recently received an NVRam and USB comms board for the 808 from VL400 and installed them yesterday.
If possible I'd like to test my modifications but since I'm working on a project car that is no where near completion I don't have a working loom to plug the ECM into. Question is, if I hook up just the required power and earth connections to the ECM will I be able to then test the USB comms by reading the NVRam using TP5 or am I likely to damage something by not having it all connected up properly?
Cheers,
Steve.

Thats fine and will work. Most the development work happens on a bench like that.

im trying to setup a test bench for a VS PCM, do I need a variable power supply or can I use a standard supply which delivers a const. 13.8V . Also how much current should it be capable of handling?

x2. If your running injectors (flow test bench) you might need something like a pc power supply that can deliver a few amps, but nearly anything will do for just comms and some data/testing. I run a 13.8v 8 amp radio power supply, but its total overkill. I reckon you'd be ok with 0.5 amp probably for just booting it up and data/sensors. 1 to be sure.
