Reading A VX/VY Flash EEPROM

Well I haven't bricked my test bench PCM yet .... but I can see it happening while developing the bin/cal write code for the flashtool.

So the question is has anyone tried using a PLCC socket over the top of the flash chip and then using an adapter cable read or written the flash chip using a EEPROM burner? Would save pulling the chip off and socketing the PCB (yes, I am lazy!). I suspect it wont work as the CPU will fire up once power is applied but thought I'd ask anyway.

Have not tried it. I would assume the factory would use some sort of JTAG interface to get the initial code into them.
I have a couple of spares lying around if you brick one.

I only have the 1 ecu ....its in my vx but i will give it a shot.....be a good reason to socket the unit anyway ...that is if i brick it...

I had been considering building a board like that but I had already socketed my flashes on my bench unit so I did not see much use in it till I was reading this and it occured to me that the logic analyzers I have have the same flash as the ECM and I could possibly have some fun trying to do that, but we shall see. It would still be easier to reprogram them later if I just socket them though, if I ever figure out what cpu they are running in there anyway.

im pretty sure you will have to socket the chip, i have had no luck reading or writing using a prohrammer while the chip is fitted.

Socket needed I had no joy either. I have a socket here but no spare ecu......poor old wagon needs a heart to run

Well its a little harder to brick the PCM than i thought. Managed to erase the cal segment and you can still connect and dump the bin/cal - the PCM just thinks the security is always passed and continues like normal most of the time. The cal segment is all 0xFFs

Wow, the fact it erased correctly sounds promising, and a nice bonus that you can experiment with cal writing without it being too likely to brick it
