Low Cost USB to TTL rs232 adapter ???

Post by fat265 »

These are FTDI and packaged nicely ? anyone tried one.
It looks like its equivilent to the other boards available ( don't want to step on toes ) but these are ff the shelf ( if they work )

or

I assume a diode between the TX and RX and you got yourself a 8192 aldl to ( USB ) rs232 adapter ?

forgetting the 160 baud bits below do you thing it would work ( the usb ftdi chip shoutl replace the max232 that is just a level converter and inverter )

I got one at work i just need to add the diode and check it out

Yep the FTDI module will work fine but the techedge style circuit has been known to be a little sus and can run data errors.

I got it working ( for a little while )

I used a FTDI to TTL RS232 Adapter ( this one http://www.dontronics-shop.com/ftdi-usb ... cable.html )

This connected ( as non echo ) directly to the 808 RX,TX and GND

As per these pins on PCB ( Image )

I didnt use the max chip as it was not needed. ( yes i did check the usb adapter was true 5V TTL not 12V )

At first it didn't work but then I thought maybe the signals need to be inverted ( like the max232 does )
I found a handy utility that can reflash the ftdi chip ( from the ftdi website ) and its got a invert TX and RX option..

Walaa it worked.. detected OSE 12 Pro 1.10 ( could read flash show dash etc )

I frigged around a bit ( still had wires floating about on the bench ) and powered it down drilled a hole in the ecm case to poke the wires through and after i powered it up again it no longer linked..

after a few hours of frigging around I conclude I have zapped the ecm somehow ( as I tested the usb adapter and another one ).

i assume the inputs of the ecm ( on the pcb maybe cmos or something ) anyway its dead..
more sensitive then I would of expected.

ECM still works fine just no link

anyone done this before.

buggers... oh well only about $30 for another ECM

kinda annoying as I was getting excited.

I have been doing some research maybe i need to set the Set the latency to 1 in control panel device manager ? for the USB serial port ?
maybe I didnt brick it ???

I got a new ECM today but its a one wire one ( from VR manual ) and I cant get that to work either but works with kalmaker so maybe its the latency issue
from memory it was set to like 14

fixed it latency set to 1 sweet...

I ended up using the VR computer with a diode and resistor mod..
I will check my VN computer maybe its ok and it was a fluke it as detected previously..

I changed it back to a latency of 16 and it didn't work. Then put t back to 1 and it worked.. ( I also tried 4 and 8 and they worked also. but I will leave it at 1 )

Sorry to revive such an old thread, but I was wondering if there were any more details on how this was connected to the VN 808 board?
Been doing some experimenting with the hi speed baud from the 808, I've been finding details difficult to come by.
