I was thinking of the pintle cap.

That's an idea.

My fuel reg has the gauge on it, I'm my thoughts the gauge should stay at pressure when primed. Until the engine is started? Not drop straight away back to zero?

In theory YES provided all is well but with time it will strart dropping over a short time but not straight away. If your gauge is dropping as soon as it stops priming there is a problem.

Fuel pressure leak down after prime event could also be:
Pump check valve
Leaky regulator
Any leak in between

I'll assume you have checked those things.

Anyway, To reverse flush, take injectors out and install upside down in the rail. This is discussed in The1's injector testing thread.

And also check the vacuum hose to the regulator for fuel. I think you have checked most of these things in the past and it looks to be a possible injector stuck open.

For me this issue has always been the check valve in the pump. I had 5 pump's check valves fail in a row years ago due to BP 95 fuel, it had some contamination that fouled everything up with bright red ultra fine dust over several weeks to a few months after each tank washout and pump replacement.

Stopped happening after I switched to 91/E10 and 98.
I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.

Hi, I installed a check valve prior to the fuel filter recently, and it may have helped, but I don't know as I'm still having a problem.

I had adjusted fuel pressure reg and had the fuel vac hose disconnected, no sign of fuel. Also I've had the reg apart, and diafram didn't look to have any holes in it.

Yes, if I turn the key to the on position and look at the reg gauge straight away, (a matter of 3 seconds) it shows zero.

I have a set of injectors from the1, that replaced the original metal bodied ones, and it didn't make a difference.

I mite of forgot some thing here, I will get to it.
