ER309L filler is what you want for that, it's amazing for dissimilar metals and it's my go-to filler for anything involving stainless.

Here's a bad photo of a 304 SS v band I welded to a cast housing using ER309L:

You are correct festy, 309 is very good for joining mild steel and stainless without any reaction but for what biggvl was doing the 316 stainless filler is fine, by the time if and when it reacts he won't give a shit ! Good heads up for other guys looking at doing similar

just bought an ac/dc tig last weekend, good read this thread, as you all know I'm fairly used to a mig welder, and in the way back past i have done a lot with oxy welding, but the tig is a new concept, one I want to get stuck into for its alloy/stainless abilities!

only had a 2.4mm tip so wasn't perfect for what I need but I got to have a bit of a test run, welded some roll bar off cuts together, and a piece of 2mm plate :punk:

Nice work for a beginner mate, when your learning just count as you go, 1 2 fill 1 2 fill 1 2 fil
It's easier to start on a lower setting and work up than just blow holes, always make sure your tungsten is sharp. Start on s/s before alloy its way easier and final tip of the day is to have some reference before welding, 2-3 steadies the hands great :)

thanks for the tips, your definitely right about a sharp tip and a steady hand!

on that note I got the right collets and collet bodys to use my 1.6mm tips, so I had a bit of a play with some stuff last night, started off butting up two offcuts of exhaust pipe, tried both fusion and filling this one.

I then started looking for alloy, I thought I had a 1/4 of a sheet somewhere but I cant find it, but I did find a heap of bits I cut out of the gemini dash panel for gauges, so I stuck them together for some fun :)

I then wondered how hard it would be to weld a manifold, so I got one of the 3 ecotec ones I have no use for and did a test run

Definitely saw the benefit of the cleaning action on new tigs with this alloy!

loving it, enjoying the new toy, just need something to actually use it for now lol!

I don't have any stainless at the moment other than the exhaust on my daily driver, lol so i'll have to find some and have a play at some stage.
