Don't know, they only pulled the timing cover and left it there. apparently they were only cruising around so it wasn't turning to many rpm. Guess well find out in another episode.

I don't know about the ecotecs but the pre-eco are an interference engine.

Seriously one of the coolest things I have ever seen. I watched the landing stream live last week and have been waiting for the camera footage to be downloaded all week.

The tech has been available somewhat for a long time but it's been limitations in weight, storage and bandwidth that forbid use of camera like this on missions.

These cameras were fitted for engineering purposes as they wanted to see how the landing systems would work in the Mars environment, you can only simulate so much on Earth. The previous rover used the same landing systems but there was bugger all cameras so they never got to confirm if it worked as expected even though it was successful.

These rovers are huge and heavy, about the size of a small car. They had a lot of issues developing the parachutes as they kept failing in tests due to the hyper sonic speeds in which they deploy and the high loads produced by the payload. As you could see the chute deployed pretty much flawlessly. This is important for future development as they place larger and larger payloads and eventually people.

Mars is hard to land on as the atmosphere is only 1% as thick as Earth so you can't slow enough during entry so chutes must operate in super/hyper sonic speeds without failing and then the chute can't slow the payload enough either due to that thin air so rockets come in to finish the job. So many complications and steps which all must work successfully and we had the privilege to see it happen at multiple angles.
