$8K for a gearbox? WTF?

Post by psyolent »

glad i drive my VX.
my friends daughter has a VW Golf. apparently, the dealer has told them it needs a new gearbox. for $8000.
guessing its one of those DSG things which are known for failing.
am i just a stingy arse bastard or does $8K for a fucking gearbox sound stupid? i could buy 4 x VX shit boxes for that kind of money.
Cheers,

That is a common problem with a lot of euro models, go well but rip you a new one when it comes to repair/maintenance :(

Probably dirt cheap in euro land but because these are still fancy/specialist cars in our lands people put a premium on everything.

I was talking to a local transmission specialist early last year and at the time he had a VW (just out of warranty) in his shop. His price to fix the transmission was over $10k. It seems with the conversion rate between the AU$ and the Euro has got better in that time.

Thats pretty cheap, when those were relatively new I knew a guy on a forum that was quoted about 16k to replace his and they didn't want to warrant the failed one even though it was only a year old. Scum bag vw.

One of my work mate's manual skoda clutch burned out and needed it replaced asap as it failed short noticed before he got around to doing a solid flywheel and performance clutch conversion. Clutch cost over 3k, just a stock genuine replacement and it will just burn out again anyway. they doesn't hold up to the turbo 2L power and slip out of the box.

No, newer cars are designed with built in redundancy that usually come into effect at 100,000kms, they want you to buy a new car....

The bulk of the population can't afford to walk into a dealer and buy a new car outright, most cars are brought with finance, weekly low payments are easy for most, but $8k for repairs are usually out of reach and the car gets scrapped, i know, I see this every week...

makes me feel a little better about the $4k rebuild of my wifes holden cruze gearbox that was including labour to remove/rebuild/replace.

holden wanted $3k for a "remanufactured one" that's the only option they have for it.

yeah like my company work car, the box started to fail around 70-80k and shy of 100k the 4th gear failed entirely. Have been driving without 4th for a while now but I feel 3rd is well any truly on its way.

Better organize a 2nd hand box G, and a new clutch. I'm already 4k overdue for the service and it was only due 2.5 weeks ago lol.
