Innovate guage dead

Post by Gareth »

Hi all,

After searching the net for answers I’ve not been able to find answers so I thought I’d post here to see if anyone can help.
As per the title I have an innovate AFR guage that is totally dead, has power to the board but no life on the screen. I have checked for the basics like dry solder joints but this is a little too modern/complex for my repair skills. Can anyone point me in a direction?

is that component marked D6 looks like a diode ok? looks kinda cracked in the image but hard to tell. Plug it in and check with multimeter that it has voltage on B+ to rule out wiring.

I got 3 innovate widebands and one is half dead when i power up keep getting errors only works like 2 in 10 times on power up probably
I have googled and lot of people have had similar problems with them :(
Good luck with it mate hope you can fix it and bring it back to life

I have seen nothing but trouble with the innovate products. Doesn't surprise me.

Looks quite complicated.

Thanks Nigel, I checked power to the board and all that is fine, That D6 is attached fine but doesn't flow in either direction? the multimeter shows 0.000 both directions? other diodes show flow in only one direction. There is no battery voltage at that D6 either.

Vlad, yes, this is at least the third one of Innovates products that has let me down, this will be the last. This guage has only been used once :(

I tried to trace the input power but its hard to see the other side, I'll have to desolder the two halves I think? Any thoughts?

That diode looks cooked. Sounds like it's a short circuit.

Looks like a typical SMA diode. just grab a 30v/60v SMA diode and pop it on, theres no way it would be flowing more then either of those two values since its designed for a car (I assume?).

I went through two MTX-L before going to a AEM. I had a similar issue end the end.

That's a protection diode, its wired up in reverse so if you accidently get the + and - the wrong way around, it goes dead short and takes out the fuse which *should* be in circuit to your wideband. If there's no fuse, there's only so much current that little guy will flow before it pops, and then you've got full 12v, reversed, going into that gauge and it'll do all kinds of damage (not repairable)

If you've got no continuity between the positive wire and that diode, its likely a trace has also burnt up on the back of that board.

It's not just reversing that'll damage it though, a loose battery terminal will let the starter motor pump back a huge voltage and do the same thing.

You might get lucky and its just a voltage regulator on the back side of that board and maybe a trace.

I'm still on my Innovate wideband from about 10yrs ago. So far so good!

Gareth posted it up to me, im prob not the best person to have a look but anyway i think i have it working. It's now powering up showing E2 heater circuit open, so ill post it back for him to test.

I found a few things the input splits off to 3 or 4 circuits, one for the display, one as a reference maybe its 2volt and one to power the IC 5v from the 12v input.

The D6 diode on top is for the display, it was short, replaced that, display then worked showing low voltage error E9. Then i split the 2 boards and found input diode D1 and R14 12k Resistor short at top of the image, replaced those and now getting E2 heater circuit open. So fingers crossed that's about it, currently drawing 140ma with peak power on around 200ma.
