Even when attaching to to process after its run and connected, it still throws the same error and prevents from proceeding. My only way around was using two applications, one was just a slave passthrough app for J2534, and the other used the slave app to send/receive data. Using a different J2534 obviously doesn't have this problem, but I needed the nano for contract work I was dealing with so that was my work around.

Curious, how are you using it in visual studio? I've considered trying to free my nano from it's licensing as it's annoying if I'm without internet and license has expired (which has happened twice).

License expire happens even when directly developing in visual studio.

The license is tied into their actual J2534 dll used for communication. So when licensing expires, it then prevents usage of the tool

I just click update on the licensing every time I use the nano, its become a bit of a force of habit now before going out to a clients.

Good call Tazzi, I will follow suit, happened to me a couple days ago, but luckily my phone hotspot saved me.

I've used it with tech2win with expired license. It will notify you license is expired and you have 3 uses left. If you close window without clicking ok it will always say you have 3 uses left. Gds2 won't work though. My phone hotspot won't renew my license unless I use a VPN. Apparently server is blocked by at&t network. And vx manager automatically updates my license when I run it.
