Re: Vlad's rides thread
So I got this NOS garnish as a spare for reasonable cheap, just under $300 which considering uncracked used ones in VGC are going around 400-500 its a bargain!
Since my HVAC had been busted in a previous attempt to change the heater core by some useless person I picked up a a decent one from pick a part.
Out of both places I went there was only a total of about 4-5 VN/VP cars and this one was the only not broken. VR/VS are different due to a different evap core design.
Pulled it all apart and sent the 40-50 screws and all other metal parts for zinc plating as they were a bit rusty and sad looking.
Also ordered a new evaporator core just because I can't be bothered cleaning and flushing them out. Dirt always falls in when you remove the gas lines at the top so not worth the risk contaminating the rest of the new system.
So next was to remove the old dash and get to the old HVAC.
Out it comes!
Bit of a can of worms lol.
Once I had that out I noticed the series 2 VP have a different bottom have of the HVAC due to a revised drainage design which uses a integrated single offset drain, the older design used a dual drain with detachable rubber hoses. I don't have the extra hole in the tunnel so I decided to swap the section over.
It was filth inside the original HVAC as well. So here is before cleaning and after. They have a very delicate foam insulation tray presumably for preventing external condensation when the AC is used.

Re: Vlad's rides thread
That's bettera!
So I got some more self adhesive foam of the various types needed and sorted the heater core as they don't come with foam on them these days.
Also profile cut the foot well heater/AC flap seals, drainage seal too. Handy being able to digitally draw files and cut them on machines at work. Perfect every time!
Then I did these by hand given they are just straight strips.
Next was to sort out that cruise control cable hole in the firewall. I used a washer with the same OD as the grommet to place where I wanted to make sure everything would clear and then marked the spot. I then used a spark metal point and push the spot where I needed the drill hole to make an indentation visible from the inside of the car on the firewall.
Drilled it and then used my 20mm sheet metal punch and made the perfect hole.
As you can see the factory divet in the firewall for this cable is miles off from being any good.
Perfect, no actually VSH!

fully Vlad spec.
That garnish needs restoring Vlad.
Ah those flaming HVAC boxes. such fun. The VR/S ones are completely different due to the firewall plus the way the dash demist works, very very different beast.
Its coming along bloody lovely mate. Good work.

Re: Vlad's rides thread
Its not completely different, the upper portion is different somewhat but the lower section is the same as my red VP.
The firewall is actually virtually the same from VN to VS bar a few tiny details like missing/added a couple thread holes/studs and cutouts.
Yes the garnish needs some attention down the track, one corner has some scratches that need sanding, cut and compounding and the lip seals replaced as they has shrunk and come off in some spots. Also wouldn't hurt mounting to a spare boot to slowly push the backing frame near the middle back in line as its a bit wonky from sitting over 2 decades on a shelf. left mounted up will casue the plastic to settle into the correct line to match the boot metal.
Apart from a few minor details its pretty mint.

Extractors have arrived from HPC here at work. Will open the package and look at them at home. Look forward to seeing the new finish.

Re: Vlad's rides thread
I'm stuck with 2 things and need some help.
1. I am unable to find a laser cutting service that can cut some small items from couple mm SS. Either they don't exist anymore, not interested or don't answer or get back to you. I need someone that I can email them the files and the material spec, pay and expect it in the mail in a timely fashion.
2. A/C flexible hoses, need some cunt that will make me hoses without making up bs excuses or not even trying. So someone please let me know of a A/C specialist that actually does A/C related jobs.
These hoses aren't available new, aftermarket or genuine and the fittings are obscure but can be reused with new ferrules and new rubber hose.

Re: Vlad's rides thread
look for water jet cutters for the intricate stuff, my bloke can cut up to 70mm steel, but cuts alloy plate so much smoother then laser cutters, also they can cut all sorts of stuff lasers cant!

Re: Vlad's rides thread
Got these back as mentioned a while ago. Ding!
Made some tweaks to the shrouds from the original to fit to new core and then fitted new foam tape.
Installed the thermostat switch by measuring the locations from the old one to make sure it will make its way around to the mounting position correctly. Then I hot melt glued everything to prevent fretting.
Removed the old carpet.
Then spent the whole next day cleaning the good used one I got last year. Took me ages as there was heaps of beach sand caught in the piles and I was beating with a pvc pipe and vacuuming for hours. About half to 1 L of sand came out and still little bit left even now but will eventually clean it out. Then I washed it with cleaner and water and let it dry for few days.
