The VR

Post by pungent »

Well after the issue's etc that you guy's helped me out with I thought I should put up some info on the car.

I have put the car through hell and back in the time I have owned it.

Purchased the car basically stock.

Started as Green, then went into primer, then black base coat then midnight purple with basic engine bay smooth.

Was an auto with 3000 stall and shift kit and 3.7 LSD diff, Basic 304 with cam etc on the first build.

Now as it sits...

304 with new bearings, honed and moly rings, Blue racer cam, Heads decked 50th, basic clean up of ports, LT1 springs, bolt on adjustable roller rockers, Pro-comp lowrise single plane manifold, 4 barrel throttlebody, 775 injectors.

Yella terra 7kg lightened fly wheel, exedy heavy duty clutch, Supra 5 speed and 3.9 shimmed LSD diff.

Car is a custom blue pearl.

Just as a mention everything on this car is done by myself from engine build to paint to diff rebuild etc etc. Nothing is overly special but a lot of fun (and spanners thrown sometimes :-) ) and learning along the way.

When I first sprayed the engine bay. Lost count of the hours spent in here.

Should mention the plans for the future...

This is basically a $500 complete engine I purchased and done some basic stuff to just to get the car driving as I lost 3 years of rego with it sitting in the shed.

What I currently own sitting in the corner of the shed. Rebuilt shift kitted VN auto (will get 3500 stall).
355 stroker kit and the block etc is already machined and decked etc to suit, camtech solid cam and lifters, double springs, torquepower duel plane high rise manifold etc.

But now what I gotta re think everything for is the Turbo that a mate offered me at the right price not long ago that is also now sitting in the shed......

Well after a lot of stuffing around and tuning the standard manifold is back on the car.

The 4 barrel manifold ran well in general but could not get anywhere near consistancy in plug colour. Every plug had a huge variation.

Had to run it very rich to get any sort of performance and the car was still almost a second slower 0 to 100kmh.

When I pulled the 4 barrel of there was also a puddle of fuel sitting in the bottom of the manifold so I would say distribution was also terrible.

I knew it was a cheap manifold but damn, will not reccomend one to anyone. :wall:

being a single plane wouldn't have helped either, they are designed for high RPM use not low rpm!

Ran a redline highwinder couple years ago with pretty good results on very similar combo.

Was hoping being a copy of that manifold results would be close but far far away.

Only had to attack both sides with the angle grinder to get it to clear the heads then attack it at the back with die grinder to put the dizzy in.

Well after it sitting on stands again for another 3 or so months after selling the manual its finally back on the road again.

So it now has the VN auto box in and a 3500 TCE stall.

Put it to the test on the weekend and drove it 190km to an 1/8th mile drag track, put slicks on, done 7 passes and then swapped tyres back over and drove it 190km back home again.

Auto and stall ran better then excellent. Had a couple of brand name converters over the years and this TCE is easily the best by far.
Running the VN box from the VR ecu seems to be working fine. (still haven't done speedo) Checked oil when got home and still a nice red colour.

AFR under normal driving stayed at 14.4-15.3 the complete trip even up and down hills so fuel economy was IMO very good for the day. Still room for improvement though.

Best times for the day were 8.91, 8.93, 8.93 and a 8.94. Fastest car has gone and was also very consistant.

Pic from the drags
