I'd run something way smaller if you plan to use a stock timing chain. Something similar to not much bigger than a VN s1 cam is about as big as I would go on a stock chain.

I have a rollmaster single, IWIS chain, running 90lbs on the seat springs so that is not an issue.

It seems pointless to fit a small cam, I can do that with high ratio rockers.

With 90lb springs I wouldn't go much over 200º and 430 lift. The rollmaster single row is actually similar if not weaker than the stock ecotec chain as it is limited by only 2 links where as the stock chain is limited by 4 links albeit weaker material.

Those are LS6 springs, good for .550 lift and 6500rpm. They have slightly less seat pressure than Comp #105 springs but greater spring rate so more over the nose pressure.

Worst case I'll have to upgrade to a dual chain.

This is smaller, I don't think there is much point going smaller than this.

Duration @ .050" is 212°/212°
Lift is .520”/.520” with 1.6 rockers
Lobe separation is 113 degrees

I run a double chain on similar cam but 470 lift. I know Gareth had troubles with the rollmaster single chain on a customers race car with VN v6 running a crow cam stage 3 which is smaller than that or my cam, chain snapped so he upgraded it to double row.

Nope. Moment of weakness last night but a cam isn't in the short term plan. I just don't know the state of the rotating assembly. If it survives the next few months than a cam may be in it's future.

I do have a double row chain on a VN motor but I think the cam gear is different?

edit:just checked VN double row has 3 bolt flange on cam shaft. no go.

For a double row chain you will need to delete the balance shaft and get a machined oil pump cover for clearance. If you can't put up with the engine shuddering at 1600rpm then you also need to get a 50% balance on the bottom end as the stock is 36% to allow the balance shaft to do it's magic.

If you are going to turbo it, leave the cam stock, upgrade the springs to 105 and turn the boost up. You should be able to easily make 300kw at the engine on 20+

I would only consider a bigger cam with turbo if you are going all out on the engine, like forged pistons and strong rods, ported heads, studs throughout etc.

I drove a VN with balance shaft delete for years. Yeah, I'm well familiar with the required mods. Balance shaft delete was going to occur in the future (when the trans comes out to do the rear main seal and converter swap comes and I can block the oil feed to the rear bearing on the balance shaft)

So NZ is back in Level 4 lockdown but my employer has essential business status so we have been working through. Since the country went into lockdown last Tuesday night I've done 3 night and then 3 day shifts this week. Finally a day off and not having to wear a face mask all day.

Got an update this morning on my cam magnet, apparently it has arrived in NZ and is out for delivery so it was time to make some progress before it arrives. Got the exhaust system fully buttoned up. I think the Captains side manifold may be touching one of the ARP head studs. It looks like it's fully home and flush against the head. If it seals all good other wise it may need to come out so I can clearance the exhaust manifold a touch.

I also swapped in a cap screw in the very front exhaust manifold bolt hole, the one that tends to fail.

Whilst I was there I swapped out all the old rocker bolts and fitted new cap screws.

Fitted up the EGR valve on the back of the head and cleaned and re-fitted the earth for the wiring loom that is on the back of the same head. Long term I think the EGR needs to find a new home. Just need to get that big nut off....

Plan for tomorrow (weather allowing) is to remove the PS pump and clean it all up.

I also need to replace the serpentine idler pulley bearing as it's rough and clean up the mount for it. That may possibly be a job for Sunday night at work. Also, I have this useless ABS bracket taking up space. That might need to disappear at some stage as well. Shame it's spot welded in place.

But it's now after 5 pm and no delivery :(
