Datsun 240z with L20ET

Heres a new project. Its my mate Ross's Datsun 240z. The intent is to create a Wangan Midnight replica track car, although since its 2011 and were a couple of geeks (delco geeks at that) unlike the original it'll be delco efi with OSE12P

Its early days yet, but heres some pics of the beginning.

Heres the car after we dug it out the back of the shed where its been sleeping for some years.

Most the parts have been gathered for the delco conversion, what we dont have were picking up sunday, or are in the post. 2 bar map, a set of RB20 high impedance 444cc injectors (fit straight in), VN TB, VK EST sensor for engine position sensing. We have a camira EFI loom labled and ready....

Thanks to six_shooter for posting your 240 project up here, its given us a clear guide on how to delco an L series engine, and Ive grabbed the tune from code59.org so we'll use those VE and spark tables (after munging them in excel to fit OSE12P) on top of a VN V6 tune for a starting point.

Watch this space, were aiming to be on the track in about 3 weeks!

Have done some more researching. Have confirmed that commodore 3x 18x ignition is a PITA for conversions, too big to fit on an engine thats not designed for it, and too fiddly to create the same pattern other ways. Have ordered a couple of D1998A ignition modules from the states, will go the american 6x60 degrees + 10 degrees TDC pattern instead.

The trigger is just sitting on its own magnetism here, but Im thinking pretty much this location, with a small bracket on the bolts behind it might be the go.

Antus is going over there tonight to have a fiddle, he hasn't had a chance the last few days!

Got a couple of hours in tonight. Got the crank trigger pretty figured, going to set it up like this, still need to weld or bolt the two parts together and get the notches in. Thats the VT ABS sensor, and you cant see but theres a small nut and bolt and spring washer locating it and holding it in. Hopefully the edge of the balancer isnt too thin, its narrower than the pickup on the sensor, but I think (hope) it'll be enough. Anyone want to hazard a guess if it should work?

Have the end of the loom installed through the firewall and in to the cabin, used the same 2" holesaw as for the guages on my track gemini, and the camira loom and camira rubber grommet fitted perfectly (cant see it in this pic though).

Ignition module needs to be fitted to a backing plate, then here. We have sourced leads that'll reach and fit (also not shown).

We have replaced the grille mount with a custom one thats holding the intercooler. The piping lines up with the manifold (underneath)

(Not shown) coolant temp sensor is mounted in the front of the engine in the factory sensor hole. The threads just lined up and it screwed in. Fuel pump relay is wired through the cabin to an electric pump at the back.

Still waiting on TB adaptor, Injectors, Fuel reg.

only suggestion i can make is to make sure that metal you make the bracket from is pretty thick, or brace the outside of it, the last thing you want is engine vibrations making the long piece flap in and out!

other than that looks like its coming along nicely!
