constant hall effect faults

Post by Mahse »

hi all,
I only post on here when I'm absolutely stumped, and this is definitely worthy of that title.

I'll go from the start.
did a 5L motor swap, somehow I lost injection pulse in the process.
no biggie just powered up pink a6 and all good.

that motor shit a bearing, so another motor swap, now this time it mysteriously killed the hall effect sensor during the swap.
ok. no biggie, go throughout snap on and gm fault flow charts, yep comes up as hall effect fault.

switched that dizzy with a brand new one. went first hit. yay.

drove around for 2 days, same shit. no spark, go throught flow charts, same jazz, hall effect error.
so thus time I install a new zd1900 from jaycar.
still no spark. still showing hall effect fault.

I've sanded the back of 2 ignition modules of runners to ensure optimal earthing,
I've tried 2 coils off runners.
tried 2 ecu's.

refuses to spark.
I'm waiting on a m8 to bring a pair of multimeters so I can double check hall effect manually.

what am I missing?

Id be looking at replacing the ignition module.
I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.

My question is when you tested the hall effect unit did it have power and earth? If so and no output yes it's the hall effect unit if not it's possibly the module or wiring. The wiggle test is a good one to help find intermittent faults.

yes, I did the snap on fault find chart, it's got no negative pulse from the Brown tacho wire.
but it's brand new from jaycar.
I can understand if it blew the sensor in the new dizzy, but not 2 new ones.

Bugger the snap on chart. Read the holden one it says to measure the current to test it. There's 2 thresholds not sure it's intended this way. But can be low enough to have spark but no injector pulse (or vise versa) thats from experience the book doesn't say that. Where is the brown wire you're not getting the pulse from? The module's don't ground from the body just through the loom with the other's.

ended up sussing it.
according to snap on, u can hook a test light up to coil positive and brown loom tacho wire, if it doesn't pulse hall effect is stuffed.

just couldn't believe my luck, killed a sensor during the motor swap, killed a eBay dizzy in 2 days, and received a faulty zd1900 from jaycar.
all fixed now, bought 2 dizzys for 120, coz I'm sure it's gonna do it again now....

If your Ebay dissy was one of those cheap Chinese ones I can understand. I have seen so many with faults particularly the ones that used a Chinese Bosch module. We just fit a new Bosch module and throw the Chinese one away. The rest of the saga is bad luck by the sound of it.
