V6 LEO to LY7 conversion VE Commodore
G'day all,
Looking for anyone's experience with this swap. I have a dead VE LEO wagon and a good VE LY7.
The only electro/mechanical differences I can think of are the extra cam phasers and the VIM.
My thoughts where to use the entire VE LY7 engine harness and PCM in the LEO and just change the VIN?

Yeah I've done the same swap using above method & even back the opposite way & still made it look like it had 4 phasers but was only using 2 of them, I've even done the later swap in my parents VE from 3.0L to 3.6L SIDI.

Thinking about it a bit more as they develop power/torque at different points I copied the correct TCM across to suit that same setup too.

ahhh, yeah, I wasn't going to change the cals at all just VIN but good point.
The other thing that just sprang to mind is the exhaust is different? twins on LY7

Yeah if it were me I’d update calibration to suit that engine, remember too there is a point they changed the type of phasers & won’t run if it’s the incorrect match.
But yeah I never worried about the exhaust.

So, halfway into this conversion and it has just dawned on me that the VE LY7 only ran a 5 speed, not four....
The cost of the 5 speed is too much, I'd like to keep the 4.
Any thoughts?

Ahhhhhh.... don't think I have had anyone successfully do this.
Is there a option in the ECM for setting to suit/look for a 4spd? I guess the biggest problem would be if the operating systems between the TCM and ECM are compatible.

I’ve seen an LY7 running a 4 speed auto without a problem in a VZ, not sure how different the VE will be.
From memory biggest issue was using HPTuners as it wasn’t happy with mismatched engine/trans so had to bench flash the calibration to ECU only.

I'm 99.9% sure I had to do something funky to make it work but not sure what, what's the controller that in the vehicle LHBP,LHCP,LHDP or is it even later than these?
I've got a fair few reads from different models so should be able to sort something.

Not sure on the controller, will report back on that.
My plan at this stage is to run the 4 speed harness and if needed add the wiring for the extra phasers/sensors.
Side note, the LEO had VIM?.. didn’t know that. One less thing to worry about.
