Vt 5l shorted out.
Hi I had my vt 5l running.
I went to start after 2 weeks.
My oil return pipe from the turbo started to glow in one spot on the side of the wastegate whilst cranking engine.
Since I have not been able to start the car.
Starter wont turn over.
Fuel pump was stuck on. Now won't even turn on.
After any suggestions am lost where to look.
Power to the starter.
Thanks

Sounds to me like you have a Battery Negative terminal to Motor Lead failure ... Some call it the ground lead, some call it the earth lead.
There must be a solid electrical connection between the Starter motor chassis and the Battery negative terminal.
Typically there is a cable that runs from the negative battery terminal to engine block, then rely on the starter having a good ground to the engine block.
Some hook to a head (Bad idea) vs the block (good) and if that connection breaks, it will use whatever is available, even if it shouldn't ... I have seen metal fuel (petrol) line become the ground lead!
I would say it's using the oil drain tube as it's ground (earth) path.
-Enjoy

Intelligence is in the details!
It is easier not to learn bad habits, then it is to break them!
If I was here to win a popularity contest, their would be no point, so I wouldn't be here!

Re: Vt 5l shorted out.
Need more information. Whats not stock on the car? What efi/code? Have you checked the fuses etc? Can you connect to the computer from tuning software? Power from B+ to the starter is only one cable. Where else do/do you not have power that you expect it?
Have you read the FAQ? For lots of information and links to significant threads see here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1396

Re: Vt 5l shorted out.
Thanks for the help guys.
Had a loose earth lead and had done the starter relay.
No more shorting.
Car cranks and runs as it should.
Alex.
