Valve leak testing

Howdy all,

Just wondering whats something common that can be used over the outer flat face of cylinder head at inlet or exhaust opening to create a good enough seal to test for valve seating?

I know the head repairers I used to go to had a vac pump with plate & then some sort of foam to test, I are just using the vac hand pump & tried a few different materials (rubber sheet & foam) but they don't seal well enough.
Funnily enough though I used the rubber seat out of my radiator pressure tester & it sealed well enough, but isn't big enough to fit across the opening of 90% of opening's of head!

Any idea's & thought's appreciated!

I know the tool your talking about but If your got the head off pour some kero into the ports and look around the valves. On the car cylinder leakage test (gauge is best) by putting air pressure into the cylinder and listening at the intake and exhaust.

I used thinners to test for leaks. its viscosity is very low, could use metho as well, I just had thinners on hand.

Watch the thinners piss out like a hose on leaky valves. I did this on a ford head and boy did it leak!

Yeah I know of that test with head off, but it's more so just to test on the car to diagnose before extra labour to quote job's up!

It's funny the rubber from cooling system pressure tester is o.k. but the rubber that hey use for inner guard's of like the triton is obviously too hard & can't get enough purchase to seal.

maybe go to clark rubber see if they have something ?

I've used one before on a proper head bench and it was a foamy looking material

Have you tried Vaseline or grease?

There both good idea's thanks!

I was hoping someone may know of the type of foam material, but yeah I'll just go into clarke rubber & look for a tight knitted foam material & if it doesn't seal on what I know is a good valve seat I will try vaseline!

I have 1 of those it would be initial testing & then once manifolds are off then use the vacuum plates to identify even closer!
