Bench Programming power supplies

Post by VX L67 Getrag »

Back in the day I used to be able to get away with a standard 12v with less than 1 amp power supply but now the later model controllers are getting more power hungry some of them can draw up to 30amps from what I'm told.

So I went to a PC power supply as most of them have a high amp rating but with my testing there only showing 11.7 to 12.2 volts which really wont be enough for most controllers as they really like it around 13v so trying to find a reasonable priced bench power supply & found these 2 on eBay does anyone have any better idea's?

I know there only 10amp but I think that should be enough?

I've got the exact same but 12V version of this one, and had it since I was 15 or so and used it for everything. Very tough and forgiving.

They same a trim adjustment on them also, very good for dialing the exact voltage you need, or like me maxing out so I can blow up electronic stuff for fun

I bought one of these a couple of years back:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Soldering-Ir ... 2346f0e7e4

Does 5 Amp output which I've found to be fine up to now but being and SMD rework station is also useful as the soldering iron and heat gun have been great for working with memcals.
I don't use it all that often so not sure how robust it is, but it's still all working at the moment.

CB radio power supplies are normally very cheap, and 13.8V is common.

I recommend either of these two:

JayCar: http://www.jaycar.com.au/Power-Products ... y/p/MP3800

Ebay: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/111280062283

The jaycar one is what I currently use, and Iv had pretty much an entire VE electronics system fired up on bench all at once at 14v at it was all hunky dorey.
Iv had it for a couple years and its been good. I do find its not that accurate though, I get the multimeter out to check what its on. And after applying the power to devices I find I need to re-check and adjust the voltage.
Also, it has a built in feature to cut voltage if it detect is you bridge pos to neg. But.. seems over the years this has kinda warn off and I trip the house power sometimes

The ebay link is the unit I will be upgrading to. It came highly recommended from a mate that uses it on a daily basis and is very accurate. Best of all its here in Aus as well!

For the record there is no way you need 30amps. Maybe in car, with injectors open and fuel pump on or something but being a logic only bench device I doubt you'd need more than 2. I used an 8 amp 13.8v supply for a radio, and share it with radios :P Never had a problem, including e38s. If I had an e38 i'd measure its draw. Can anyone do that?

The ebay one may be more than you need but it looks like a good unit that will serve your needs in to the future.

I'd say its the E39 etc. that drive SIDI engines that you need more current for. They pull a fair bit when you power them up, I'm guessing its charging the caps for the DI drivers.

im still a bit skeptical about the whole E38 needing 13.8 volts! there is no way you would get that in car with engine off. without adding a battery charger, it would be just over 12v at best...
are you telling me that you put the car on a charger every time you flash an E38?

I use a pc power supply to flash everything. its worked fine for every pcm ive put on it, which is everything except an E38 mind you :P

yeah.. 30amp is a tad over kill

Im not sure the amp reading works properly anymore since that analogue dial never moves anymore
The thing is literally never moved.. I think its just slowly decaying over the years.

I personally am keen on the ebay unit I mentioned, as it details the amps pulled as well which is pretty cooooool
