Do you know if there's a module as such for the coils and trigger wheel? Or does the ECU handle it all?

Module controlled coils and crank trigger goes to module too.
IF there was a reference signal like the commodore module's send out it would be possible to change out and run 12P. That'd be ideal for you.

Unplug the ECU and crank it over and see if you still get spark. Wondering if the ECU handles cranking spark or the module?

Nah it was created by a Niva enthusiast, David Rolston.
Im guess to direct this thread a bit, im not interested in mods at present, I just want to learn a bit more about how these definitions are developed. Namely, how can you see the commands and data that this ECU uses?

Using the timing advance figure as an example, it looks wrong, how would I find out how to tweak it? Is it possible to extract the curves somehow?

Usually you would get a factory scan tool and monitor the data stream and maybe intercept and modify it then see what changes on the tool when you tamper with the data. Or if you are intimately familiar with similar systems the same algirithms might apply. To know if you have the right byte in the data stream - does the value go up and down with revs? If it does then you need to look at the calculation. Could put it in diag mode and factory service manual probably says that'll give 10 degrees. Then a bit of trial and error to get it reading right. If you could program the diag revs to 20 degrees then you could do more to get the slope right too, but i dont think you have that option.

Ahhhh I have seen a service mode advance figure somewhere, great idea.
I'll have a play.
