Going to make test bench

Post by delboy »

Just a few questions, the main one would be how to simulate rpms/crank sensor? How do I simulate dis?
I'll get pics etc as I go along! Already got a few spare looms and ecus, was going to use variable resistors where needed eg coolant temp.

I have never used one for simulating ignition but a 555 timer might do the job

I used a 556 for simulating a crank sensor, one 555 for the EST input and the other 555 for the VSS. Works well enough for simple stuff. What inputs does the ECM you have expect for DIS?

The early DIS systems here in Oz use a 'smart' ignition module that handles all the sync and sequencing. The ECM just expected a single ref input thats a square wave with one pulse per cyl and outputs a single EST output for dwell and spark events. GM started using a cam sensor input (VR V6 Auto) as a home pulse so the PCM can keep track of which cyl is firing for ignition control and sequential/banked fueling. On the V6 they also started using the 3x/18x system, the 18x was used for cranking and low RPM for greater accuracy.

Thanks I'll have google around, I also read somewhere about using a sound program and bit of headphone wire to simulate the crank sensor?? I'll keep the thread updated as I go along.

This is eaxtly what I was going to suggest.

I use a JimStim on my test bench, and it works great.

I will be adding a couple other things like VSS and such, but overall, it has worked out great for a test bench.

I bought my JimStim through diyautotune.com.

My bench has changed a bit since this picture, in fact it's on a whole different level of the house. lol
