DIY hub dyno on the cheap

haha yeah 'on the cheap' is definitely a relative term. I was looking at a pair of retarders from scrapped city bus's, they were asking $5500 ea which is cheap enough i guess... Just not within my hobby budget!

If you're working on a budget anywhere near a commercial unit, I think you're going to end up with a very nice piece of gear!

If I can keep mine portable enough for a 1-man lift and travel in the back of a ute, It should be pretty fun at car meets

Why not just use a truck diff and air brakes and make a rolling road seen one years ago over seas worked great all be it a tad bulky haha

Before I started this build I was going to do pretty much that, strip down an old trailer, add a hydraulic brake kit and build a ramp up to it.

I remember reading about that truck rear axle dyno a couple of years ago. There's surprisingly few homemade dyno's online, Is this hobby that niche? A lot of mates in high school were right into fabricating and cars. Fast forward 20yrs and my mates struggle changing a car tire...

Stub axles, master cylinders, flexible brake lines, 100KG electronic actuator and load cells have arrived for the weekend.

I was hoping the 50mm stub axle was turned down to 50mm. Instead it's hot rolled and measures to 50.5mm including mill scale. It'll be fun to try chuck up and turn down to size.

The hub face is machined at least so that will be easier to turn down around 8mm so it'll fit inside the rotor.

100% wouldn't go down this path again. Next iteration will be series 2/3 AU falcon hubs, rotors, calipers and a custom stub. These Chinese trailer hubs feel cheap, the bearings will probably soak up 10hp alone. I don't trust the studs either.
