Bench & JimStim Setup on 808

Post by yoda69 »

Been playing around with this for a week or two, and didn't find a lot of info on setting up so thought I'd post this up.
The Bench setup is what I've got setup to run all 8192 baud modules, can plug and play quick and easily different modules or ECU's, and have a number connected at the same time, ie. ECU, BCM, Cluster, etc without having to rewire.
Currently using an old PC power supply, but the 12V output is only showing about 11V on the ECU, so will need to get something better going forward, I did find an old 30 year old 12V setup for model trains in the shed the other day, so may give this a go, may be good as I can also vary voltage with it.
The JimStim I have hooked up to the 808, currently have the following working:
* Engine RPM
* MAP
* MAT
* Coolant
* Oxygen sensor
* TPS
* IAC LED, (only one as was out of jumper leads for the second

Still more to wire in, some on the JimStim (Fuel Pump, Injectors, etc.) and others separately, although still need to sort some of these out such as VSS.
Attached is my basic setup and also a simple log file using $12P and the 2Bar Petrol ADX.
Definitely a cool little too though, can see what affect changes to Coolant and MAT have on the Charge air temp, and once I have variable ECU voltage affect on the injector pulse width.
Sure the more I look the more I'll find.

I know there's a few people using this unit on the forum, so any suggestions or improvements would be great.

This looks great, I tried it a few years ago & gave up on the EST fault code & lost interest!

But yeah would be great to follow & with your vested interest can go far!

Nice Work!

EDIT: this was my topic years ago not for your reference more so to link them together...

Excellent work yoda69 :thumbup: Makes it so easy to test things out with a bench.

The EST fault will take some external circuitry to get rid of. During module mode (when the bypass wire is 0V) the ignition module grounds the EST wire so even though the ECU outputs pulses nothing appears on its internal feedback. When EST mode is requested the bypass wire goes to 5V and the module no longer grounds the EST wire. The fault is likely from when you first turn on the ref stim and the ECU see's the EST pulses on its feedback. A 74HC125 can normally be used to get around this issue - using one of the logic gates (example is using pins for gate 1) in the chip connect an input to ground (pin 2), the bypass wire to an active low enable pin (pin 1) and the output (pin 3) to EST through a 10 ohm resistor.

The EST code is why I wired in a EST module...

I was planning on going down the path of just hooking up a Camira module and changing the JimStim to a reluctor signal and feeding the module with that.
Might chase up some parts this week if I get a chance.
Any body got a simple (and cheap :)) device for getting a VSS signal?

Simple 555 timer circuit, works a treat for VSS.

I've been using a JimStim for a few years now. For what I use it for, the EST code doesn't bother me.

I have several harnesses for different ECMs to play with, though I usually have the '7730 harness attached most of the time.

1985 GMC Jimmy - A work in progress
1973 Datsun 240Z - The Toy, turbocharged and injected using GM EFI, and code59

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.
