When I had my dfi off last time I cleaned the plate as it's a heatsink, I also fine sanded the surface back then used heatsink paste on the area you can see where the heat would come from in the middle there, I also put plastic washers between the heatsink and engine block to help stop heat transfer.
I'm assuming you had to run an extra earth for this too as they normally do some weird things if it's not directly bolted to the block.

been running fine though the bolts are still directly connected, it's just the face of the heatsink on the block

Ahh cool so it will be earthing through the coil pack bolts & then mounting bracket bolts to block!

Yeh the bolts still touch on the front side only removed direct contact between block and heatsink.

Did some more testing, 3ms dwell time, also had 2 new coils for testing to throw into the mix, the number is the gap in mm. I did try a higher dwell but didn't make the results seperate anymore, it looks like there all basically the same you get slightly more from some, the only other thing i can say is the new coils are a hot red/pink spark and the old original oem coils are white/blue spark. The new coils also draw slightly more current. Pretty obvious though when you get a dodgy coil lol

A coil on my VS V6 has just died, 21 years so I think it has done well.
Looking around the price ranges seem a little strange. For example Bosch ($44.99 each), Tridon ($56.99 each), Goss ($35.99 each), Delphi ($39.99 each), NGK ($41.99 each), GenOEM ($62.99 each) and then there are the MSD style coils from MACE ($175 for 3). Any recommendations on brands that last?

Well ive never personally used anything but used oem coils and dfi's, i just buy a set from the wrecker, DFI with coils for $30 and with this testing i can't really see any reason not to continue doing that. When a coil isn't performing it seems obvious, not that ive had many die only this dodgy one i have here, it would be interesting to get another failed one and test it and see if they dropout at the same distance, I would like to get a MSD coil to test. I have put the CAD and Delphi coils on my car so i can run them, see how long they last and retest later in life.

Pity we don't have any of those yellow bodied Accell Coils for you to test in comparison. They talk them up to be of a higher output than stock or the MSD's. Would really like to know if is is true or a marketing ploy.

I got 3 new Delphi coils. Fitted the new ones, chucked the one that broke down, and have kept the other 2 old ones for spares. It is amazing the difference in power between a 3.8 litre 4 cylinder and a 3.8 6 cylinder
