They can be used. Industrial temp rating is better for automotive, though.

Is that the ones with ind in the code/name?

They do -40 to 85 degrees celsius?

I broke a leg off on mine :(

something real interesting here i found. surface mount NVRAM with a separate replaceable battery that snaps on to the chip inself.

To prevent pin breakages wrecking your day, grab a 32pin DIP socket along with the new DS1245Y. Such as .. http://au.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Mill ... msGhyhM%3d

Basically can double stack the sockets, ie plug the new DS1245Y in to the new IC socket and plug it all in to the NVRAM board. Then if you ever need to remove and reprogram the DS1245Y the stronger (and potentially sacrificial) pins on the socket do the work.
