This is my mates street car it goes 8-9 years on an engine before it needs a freshen up. Stock rotating assembly cam heads and springs low budget car can run 9.96@134mph but we get told off so had to turn it down runs low 10s all weekend does power cruise and used to do every skid comp simple stock vl pump feeding a surge tank and a big external and some 60lb injectors

Yeah that thing is a beast. But hard to compare the old buick to the ecotec, they are much more tolerant of boost where the ecotec is a bit fragile with it's brittle high silicon pistons with thin crowns and not to mention oiling issues seen in early ones like VS and early VT.

Don't L67 have different pistons though? I recall they had much thicker crowns.

They are ever so slightly thicker but it's bugger all but most piston failures are the top ring butting when it gets to hot and the crown breaks

Ah ok, yes but I have seen them fail easily from detonation as the material is brittle. One guy I knew years ago killed 4 stock NA ecotec in a row from detonation due to a china walbro pump under-delivering and leaning out. In all 4 engines the crowns shattered.

That would be the down side hypereutectic pistons.

The detonation heats the crown up the ring butt's shut and it tears the half moon out of the crown we all used to think they just shattered but I'm pretty sure it's just ripped off haha
