Late model Hyundai intermitent starting issue.

Post by vlad01 »

As usual the internet is full of people asking this question and unrelated fluff. My partner's 2019 i30 suffers from the common intermittent failed starting issue, which behaves like a flooded engine. Cranks for ages before starting or needs to be cranked for a 2nd or 3rd time before it starts. Then it won't do it for weeks or months before it happens again. It seems random, done it both when dead cold and stopped hot for 3 min like at a servo.

Anyone had this or have any insights? Seems like all the usual owners get no resolution from the dealers.

Yea. I'd go straight for the CPS. They are a very common failure with Hyundai and they don't usually throw a fault code.

CPS as in cam sensor? Common failure as in straight off the show room failures? From reports on Hyundai forums there is quite a few reports of this problem when the customer picked up the cars from the dealer or within a few days or weeks from new and while it's annoying to these people, no one said they couldn't start the car at all, They all start eventually usually by the 3rd attempt.

Her's had 20k on the clock as it has done it about 4-5 times in the 6 months of owning it. The clue might be that when she says she floors it while cranking when this happens it fixes it and it starts.

Sounds almost like a clear flood situation like the Delcos do.

It's the crankshaft position sensor but from what you say it looks like it's flooding. If it's that new back to the dealer because it should be under warranty.

She bought it near new at 20k on the clock. Problem is it's no intermittent and rare, you are never prepared to be able to do diagnostics when it happens.

The problem with Hyudaia crank sensors is they quiet often don't throw a code and always test ok when cold. Is the security light working?
