Mk1 capri, plans, complete noob

Post by Chubs0191 »

G'day,

I'm currently restoring a 1970 mk1 1600gt ford capri (4cyl), which is carb fed.

I intend to convert it to efi (one way or another) with the future intentions of building a boosted engine for it.

I am currently in planning stage, so haven't aquired anything for the project yet

And to top it all off I'm a complete noob to all this efi business, so I was wondering if anyone can help me with a good shove in the right direction.

Any help wil be greatly appreciated.

well its funny you should pop up, i have only just last week been talking to a mate who has a mate with a ?pinto? motor in his mk1 cortina which is currently turbo with a carby and hes over the carby and thinking of boost, so i have found that there is a pinto efi manifold by the looks of it, not sure if that will fit your motor or not though ?

it also looks like the pinto efi manifold has a 4 bolt flange on it which if lucky might allow a camira throttle body to bolt up (would need to measure bolt holes to see)

then there is just the matter of the dizzy, if you have an electronic option on that motor that should allow you to do it with either hall effect or reluctor ignition module (depending which your dizzy uses)

thats probably the main parts you need to find and sus out, once thats done it would be a matter of getting a wiring loom, computer, sensors and such and fitting it all up.

definately totally doable and the delco will do a great job of running it and im sure one of the 4 cylinder boys on here will have a $12P 4 cylinder tune to get you started.

thanks for the reply,

i'm not to sure about the manifolds i had an idea about fabbing one up using a factory one and grafting some inserts into it for injectors,

about the electronic ignition is there a way that something like this can be used with the aid of a couple of dfu?

yeah sure can, you could use it of you can cut slots in the balancer and mount a sensor on the front of the motor similar thing.

have you looked at a camira manifold ? it has a similar port size and spacing from vague memory. and has all the right parts. you may be able to use a magna or telstar dizzy to convert as well.

sooo i have come across an engine managment off of a vn that i had lying around, (about to get crushed)
i basically removed everything that was atatched to the wirring harness except for the knock sensor.

i'm just not really sure about the coding on the memcal and how to get the vn v6 standard tune off of it and a "$12p" tune on and also how to make it run using a trigger wheel and a tune a little bit more specific to my engine?

thanks again in advance

regards blake

You will need to get a memcal with a larger EPROM to get 12P on it - the VN memcal has 16k of space, 12P requires 32k. Either a VR manual (hard to find and expensive) or a VR auto/VS V8 auto memcal. Tuning by burning memcals is hard work so you can use an NVRAM .. https://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=167

For the trigger it depends on what the factory setup is inside an electronic ign dizzy. If its a reluctor type signal a camira module can be used.

Thanks man, the trouble is you see the factory dizzy is a simple points ignition so thats why i thought about a trigger wheel

if you can work a trigger wheel into your setup theres nothing stopping it from working.

reluctor like a commodore abs wheel sensor will do the job and interfaces with the camira ignition module.
