Hey Chubs,

I'm looking at setting up a system in a 2 Liter Escort and am wondering if you're using the standard Ford gearbox, which is identical in an Escort, and how you configured your setup to get a a speedo signal for the ECU?

Thanks.

hey buddy I haven't actually got that far with it I blew the engine up before I got to try and fit any of my stuff hence putting the ecm in a vp for now, I had this half cocked idea about spinning up a thread that has a flange to clip into the gearbox where the factory cable would run and a thread on the other end that a factory commo vss would screw onto and use a "modified" (shortened/ whittled down) manual speed sensor adaptor, then figure something out with the speedo along the lines of graft a commo dash cluster speedo drive on the back of a spare mk1 speedo similar to this http://members.ozemail.com.au/~brettsue ... ometer.htm

For a Ford escort :- http://www.brantz.co.uk/PDFs/Ford%20Gea ... %20BR4.pdf

Escorts are popular in the rallying world. Rally cars require a rally trip computer, which require a VSS signal. The above link is for the UK, but I'm sure there would be similar sources in Australia who deal in rally computers, like Terratrip.

Standard Escort gearbox has a push-in speedo cable which is held in place with a circlip, and not a screw-in fitting. Not sure what your link is to suit, but it won't work on a standard 4 speed Escort box.

Appreciate the input anyway. :-)

i have been rolling ideas around inside my head for a few days now and i wonder if it would be possible to mount up a neat little trigger wheel and use an abs sensor on a rear wheel to give you the road speed signal similar idea to a dis timing setup.

does anybody with more experience have any thoughts?

Yes that would work, if you can fabricate it. Ive been tempted to do the same, but so far have not had a chance to build it.
Have you read the FAQ? For lots of information and links to significant threads see here: http://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1396

Is there a minimum ppk value that the ecm can work with?

Meaning other than balancing issues would a single groove in the tail shaft flange be sufficient to get a working pulse?

I used to play with those gearboxes years ago.

What about making a toothed sleeve to replace the speedo drive gear on the output shaft and a crank or ABS sensor in an offset holder in place of the speedo driven gear? As far as I recall there is a bit of space in the extension housing.

Sounds like it could be an option in trying to keep the mechanical speedo for the time being is really my only consideration
