Bench harness or in car connection? PCM HAMMER

Post by gnfoster »

Sorry if I missed it somewhere.

With PCM Hammer,
Is a bench harness required to read/write to the ECU safely, or can it be done safely thru the car OBD connection with ECU still installed in car?

I use HP Tuners and 99% of that is done in car.
According to chemistry, alcohol is a solution...

Are you using PCM hammer with HPT? I thought HPT did all of this on it's own.

PCM Hammer is designed to work in car, and usually can. Occasionally the car has a fault and a module does not silence or switch to 4x correctly. Pcmhammer can usually work through this, though it will log errors and re-try. if you read and see lots of errors, a bench flash is recommended. This is no different to other software. However most people, most of the time, flash in the car with no problems.

I have done many in vehicle writes with PCM hammer over the past 6 months or so and have never had an issue. Calibration is taking 44 seconds for me. Full clone barely took over a minute iirc.

Yes, and thanks. I was thinking specifically about PCM Hammer only and did not communicate that. Your answer did however alert me to editing it so I could get the answer I was looking for.

Thanks. I've used LSDroid several times, but always use a bench harness as they suggest. Want to try PCM Hammer so I won't have to disconnect ECU each time.

From that point of view they are basically the same ... The issue is as Antus pointed out, not the software or tool, but the vehicle itself. (actually other modules in the vehicle)

If there is a disobedient module on the bus, it will affect both basically the same.

Do a "Test Write", if it goes perfect ... Then you are likely very safe doing in vehicle.

ALWAYS do a "Test Write" prior to doing an OS change especially ... Calibrations write, not so important to do a "Test Write" ... but it still should be done.
