PCM swap in an I6 Envoy...

They go by many names, P01, P59, VPW, '0411 etc. Also covering E38 and newer here.

PCM swap in an I6 Envoy...

Post by Vetteyog »

Question for the masses, I have a 2004 GMC Envoy with the i6 engine. I'm wanting to be able to tune this vehicle, but there is basically no free support for it, and I'm not ready to invest in HP tuners or EFI live. My thought was to take a P59 from a 2004 4.3l and repin my harness to use that PCM. I have compared both harness pinouts, and the only connection I do not have on the P59 the control for the variable valve timing. The firing sequence is different as well, but I figured I could just repin the harness so the V6 and firing order matches the I6 firing order. I'm sure there's other stuff I'm missing as well, but in my mind it sounds like iy could work. Anybody have any thoughts?

Not to discourage you, but I bought a used hptuners interface with 6 credits on Ebay for $300. It would be far, far less work if it supports tuning an i6. Time equals money for most of us, so I can't imagine swapping to a p59.

What is the count on the crank reluctor wheel?
I'm running a inline 6 Jeep engine on a 4.3l P59 and it runs pretty good. The only thing on it besides the engine is the cooling fans.
But I don't have any accessories on it no AC, fuel gage or anything.

It's a 24x. I'd like to get all my gauges and everything working correctly.

I'm using a 3x reluctor. I don't know of a V6 application that uses a 24x.
But I'm no expert.

Maybe somebody that has more knowledge about it will chime in.

It might be interesting to try a 24x on my Jeep engine just to see what it would do.

I didn't think of that. The P01 is a 24x, but only 512 Kb.

24x is 4.8l, 5.3l, and 6.0l coil on plug v8, 3x is 4.3l v6 with distributor, 4x is 5.0l and 5.7l with distributor, and 8.1l with coil on plug exists (I'm not sure what pcm or reluctor it uses). The i6 is a 7x. Even if you change it to 24x, no v6 ever used a 24x p01 or p59. If you go to 3x, not sure how you could control spark without a distributor.

Can I ask what you are looking to tune with your truck? I might be able to help if it is simple. You can read the PCM (P10) with PCM Hammer, send me the bin and I can change and then send back to you. Then you reflash using PCM Hammer. I am using Jet Tuners to tune. Let me know if this helps.
