Which ECU

Post by knuts2au »

Hi i looking for ideas, i want an ECU i can set up on a straight 6 to control ignition at first and later on add EFI (multipoint), but i would also like it to be OBDII compliant so i can monitor parameters in real time. Is their something that is worth looking at or do i just go straight to a MOTEC or similar?

Is there a specific reason why you want OBD2? Usually any protocol is fine, so long as you can use it. You dont need OBD2 to log it (see whats happening in real time) or to tune in real time. If thats enough check here:

If you need OBD2, then you'd need a newer system, which will cost you more for both hardware and software.

Also check the delcohacking FAQ, and have a look at the guides at the bottom:

Have you read the FAQ? For lots of information and links to significant threads see here: http://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1396

Thanks antus, i'll have a read, looks like there is a lot more going on in the "home brew" software side than i thought. I'm known for not taking the easy path, you learn more that way :)

Ok, i have an 808 and am chasing details off VL400 for boards, just noticed the 808 only has one injector output? so all injectors fire at once, not sequentialy? The EFI side is down the road a bit, not sure if i'll use manifold injection or "inserts" in my Triple strombergs yet and keep the "period" look. Decisions!
Have found loads of info on the site, thanks to all those with the brains that have contributed :)

3l straight 6 Twin CD175's ( 70 Volvo 164) they did an EFI version in 74 ( had one), trying to hunt it down for parts like EFI tank and lines. Plan is to fit a set of Triples with the injectors fitted in the carbies.

the only issue you may have is if the ports are the same as a red holden 6, cause they share an inlet port and apparently the fueling isn't real good, but if they are individual ports you should be right

Volvo are pretty good, 6 ports in 6 ports out, not cross flow thou. Great candidates for Triple webers but the manifolds are scarce and an expensive setup.

I contemplated gutting my alfa's twin side draught carbs to use as the butterflies and drilling the manifold for injector seats (didn't want to chop up a pair of DCOEs for the experiment) but ended up making a plenum and using a single commodore TB.
I got less and less concerned about looking original the further I went with the project ;)
Years ago I saw a pic of an EFI converted Muira with the carbs still in place - the injectors were on the bottom of the inlet manifold, hidden from view by the carbs. It looked very neat and original.

Good luck with the 164, they're a nice looking car. I came close to buying a BRG one years ago, can't remember what put me off in the end - but it wasn't the looks.
