Vlad the detonation ate the piston and scored the bore .

oh wow! must of been some serious detonation.
Could you hear it?
On my own stock V6 I would sometimes get loud audible detonation when the conditions were right (stock exhaust manifolds really limited available timing) , when I finally got to pull the engine down I didn't see any damage to the pistons whatsoever and they are cast.
What sized bore are they?

No couldn't hear it ,only hint was the wiff of oil blowby just before I felt it nip up.
These are cast also from special piston services $3400 per set
(91mm bore)

Interesting. I have heard that small bore engines are hard to hear of any detonation.
If that's true, it does make sense as the frequency is higher the smaller the bore so that would firstly harder to hear and secondly more easily absorbed by the block. Lower frequency has much better propagation through most medias.

sort of why i didnt have the knock sensor hooked up but I think I might give one of these a go http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/171298814467 ... EBIDX%3AIT (Unless anyone says they are crap)
would like to have knock sensor but the tuning of it is a problem .

What brand of plugs are they? I had plugs running too hot if I used Bosch plugs in a V6. In my mate's VY I looked at the other week the plugs were almost melted, eroded, white and metallic beads all over them. Put GM plugs in and problem stopped. It seems the recommended Bosch plugs and my local mechanic also noticed they seem to have incorrect equivalent heat range.
I wonder if thats the case here?

Heat range isn't uniform a few have learnt the hard way. 6 NGK is 7 Bosch.
There's a guide on one of there websites might even be NGK's

I know is different from manufacture to manufacture.
But what Im saying is the 6 NGK isn't the 7 Bosch as a hypothetical example. Their equivalents seem to run a lot hotter than they are suppose to in mine and other's observations.
Bosch plugs are just shit in general imho.
