N00B getting started 2004 VY2 V6 Commodore

Post by vk4akp »

Hi, So I've finally got my first ALDL interface.
After a lot of research I ended up opting for what is said to be the best in the world currently from 1320 Electronics in Florida.
It does both Bluetooth and USB.

So I've got a few beginners questions if that's OK so I don't beggar anything up.

Firstly the car is a..

2004 VY Series 2 Commodore Station Wagon.
3800 V6 Ecotec N/A - No Supercharger sadly.. Maybe one day! ;) .
4L60E Transmission.

The car is an ex QAS Fast response vehicle so some things may be different as it's what they call a "Police Spec'd vehicle".
Also the previous owner has had 3x different LPG systems on the car before giving up and putting it back to just normal petrol.

The car has always run rough at idle so I suspect either something has not been put back correctly or there is a sensor or something not happy.

This is one of my main reasons for getting the cable to look into this and other ideas.

So the first step I assume is to do a binary dump of the cars computer (ECM?) to see what code is being run? (I guess it's also smart to back it up).

To do this I simply load the OSE Enhanced Flash Tool (my laptop is windows 10 BTW) and select [vehicle: Flash PCM in Vehicle] then [Interface: USB ALDL], Select ECM Com port, then lastly click "Get Bin". Once finished save the file and send here for scrutiny? ;)

Out of interest how long does this take? And can I do it with the car off? (The interface seems to work the second you plug it in).

Is there anything dangerous about attempting this?

After this I'd like to have a go at retrieving the unlocking code.

Oh, I was also going to have a go at ALDL Scan. But it needs a .ALDL config file to suit the car. I am yet to find one online
Similarly for ALDLdroid. And TunerPro.

Any help / feedback appreciated

Start with the information in the faq area (see link top right). You might have trouble with bluetooth lag, the bus timing requirements arevery specific. Personally I think our ALDL cables are the best. I see your a radio amature, you should check them out :)

Posting bin will include data some find sensitive as car specific data is mapped to the address space and included, including security. I personally wouldnt worry but some people do. Your call on that. There are also some checksum issues writing to flash (pick update checksum) The details are in the flash tool thread.
Have you read the FAQ? For lots of information and links to significant threads see here: http://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1396

Hi Antus. Yes I've read the faq's but still just wanted a little hand holding on my first attempt at this. I assume as long as I'm only reading data and the ECU is not unlocked that no harm can be done?
BTW I did look at your interface. I do like it, a lot of thought put into it and the design is nice. I only went with the 1320 Electronics version because I wanted the Bluetooth option as well for when driving so I can have some gauges etc up on a Android tablet in the car.
The interface is both genuine FTDI USB + Bluetooth so for the .bin download I am connected via USB.
In fact I'm sitting in the car now all plugged in and ready to give it a go. So if you think I have it all correct as per my post I'll hit the connect and then Get Bin buttons. ??
BTW l've already tried the listen to chatter option and it looks good. I keep seeing a repeating set of frames with the car switched off. :)

Do a get bin no harm there. Do a few and compare them good to verify your connection.

OK. All done. That was both scary and cool at the same time! LoL
The Check Engine symbol came up on the dash and also the speedo tapped away at 0 - 40Kph while it was all going on.
And of course the check seatbelt beeps came up half way through and went away.

But Zero retries. Average data rate was 5 something and it was all over and done in about 3+ minutes.

I'll see if I can PM you the file and see what you think :)

Post it up here, if you plan on tuning it look into the enhanced code. Search here for it.

Actually. Maybe I can do this next bit myself.
What software do I use to try and identify what .bin version I have and if it differs in any way to the norm?

Just ran that MemCal ID Tool thingy that I was playing with last night. It had a section where I could compare the bin I just ripped.
This is what it said (Shame you can't cut and paste from it BTW).

OK. So I see $060B - which seems to point to maybe I use the "VY V6_$060B v2.41.xdf" file as the config for the TunerPro software? And maybe ALDLdroid also?

Still have no idea where to find .ALDL files for "ALDL Scan" app.

OK. Just found this.

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=725

Seems you use the .adx etc files for the VX as it's the same for the VY.
