Like the thread here on this forum that mentions buying inferior Dallas DS1245Y from China, from experience of buying these other chips like what's been linked above this post, I'd say don't do it, unless you like constantly desoldering / resoldering chips every time they die, and believe me, they will.
All chips in the photo below are dead, all bought from ebay, most have ended up in the bin, these were still sitting behind me awaiting being filed.
The 2 on the right are also the winbond W27C512-45Z as posted before me, the amount they program seems very limited, some barely once.
I have 3 programmers all say the same thing with the chips.
Most of the sellers I ended up buying them from over the last year ended up either disappearing from ebay, or ended up with a lot of bad feedback all of a sudden from selling these chips.
Decent chips from reputable traders are still relatively cheap really, 7-10 bucks for something that "will" program thousands of times, tens of thousands even.
What you need to br paying attention to when the council cleanups happen is old computers, most of the pentium 1 era stuff have video cards with OTP chips, though 1 in 5ish will be either a 27c257 or 512, usually .120ns or faster.
Even some really old network cards have usable chips in them.

Thanks for the input mate. So where do you suggest I get them from? Do you have a link or store that I can go through for known quality products?

Either Here or Here
The second link is the cheaper option.
If you're desperate, I'd mail you one.

I've used 70 of the ones I've linked no issues what so ever 10 for 8 bucks worth the outlay .I had some sst ones that were clones of winbond and would only program as winbond not sst. The China sst mtp are quite often single use otp.ds1230 and 1245y on the other had I had a lot of duds out of a batch lol

Except the chips I posted above weren't sold as OTP's, nor meant to be.

I'd be willing to place a bet that not only were all these chips not made by Winbond, that Winbond themselves probably haven't made any parallel flash chips of this type for many years, yet all of a sudden the market is flooded with them.

Microchip appear to still supply the older parallel flash chips..
The only 256 pdip chips from microchip are AT28C256, from 150ns and slower though..

They do have a cerdip eeprom that is probably worth a shot, AT28HC256..

It all depends on the seller. It is a minefield out there, but if delcowizid said hes ordered twice and they worked, I'd believe it. But you never know when the ebay seller is going to change their supplier. Ive bought winbonds, and found they put a real one in the end of the carrier so the first test worked, then the rest only wrote once.

I bought several batches of these from this seller (pulled the link from a 2016 thread here) https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/230420406366 and they were working chip pulls probably old computer bios chips. They all worked perfectly. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=4540&start=30#p62968

Thanks for the info and link. Also I’ve managed to get my hands onto some vs v8 manual memcals. (Yet to receive them) will they do the job as well? I assume they are 27c512 or similar?

Would these be ok as a 27c128 replacement?
