4L60E
4L60E
Hi Guys
Is it a simple swap to pull a 94 4l60E out of a 424 94 VR ss and replace with a rebuilt 02 4L60E trans? Or the 424 wont run the 02 4L60e?

Re: 4L60E
Is the 94 trans the 12 pin or 13 pin version?

Depends, late VR is also 13 pin. Both my 95 VR and brother's 96 VR ute were 13 pin.
I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.

Re: 4L60E
VR was the change over model when they fitted the extra PWM solenoid for the TCC.
I borrowed this from the MACE website,
I borrowed this from the MACE website,
The VR early memcal is for VR V6's made before 11/1994 (Upto VIN L772125)
The VR late memcal is for VR V6's made on or after 11/1994 (from VIN L772126)
Re: 4L60E
94 to 02 is a long stretch. I seem to recall reading that somewhere after 97 (I don't recall exactly when) the angle of the hydraulic lines changed, so they could need some pipe-bending work.

Yes, VT onwards, the 4L60e with the 2 piece casings (removable bellhousing) have the cooler fittings at a different angle and different larger size but that is something you can adapt too. The shifter linkage is also a bit different with the neutral safety switch incorporated into the shifter mechanism on the side of the box.

Re: 4L60E
If it’s pulled straight off a gen3 the converter won’t fit either. You can’t use the old converter either cause the input shaft is different on the end. The 5l has the spigot on the end and the Ls uses similar to the v6.
If you pull the old adapters for the cooler lines out of the old trans and put them in the new box the lines will fit with a bit of reshaping. Weather you choose to do this or run new bigger lines is up to you. You have a s1 vr so as mentioned you are missing the pwm solenoid for the tcc and will have no lockup if you plug this into your harness but everything else will work fine. You could always run the extra wire if you’re keen seeing as the pcm will run it if you update to a s2 or vs tune or if you’re not fussed just leave it off. If your vr had the update back in the day for code 68 to be turned off it probably won’t show a code either. As mentioned the selector shaft is longer but this fits ok due to the column shift models having the longer one as well. How you tackle this is completely up to you but hopefully this helps out and offers a bit of understanding for you.

Re: 4L60E
I have 3 4l60E cores a 94 4l60E a 98 4L60E and a 02 4L60E to build. The 02 has the much stronger looking belhousing so was thinking thats the one to upgrade. I will be putting it behind a 396 holden so the converter will be a custom built so the hardware will be upgraded i was more looking at the 424 side of it as i have the 424 out of the 94 ss with the nvram with tunerpro and a 424 out of a 98 VS also with the nvram ute and harness so if the ECU are the same which trans would be the best core to re build?

Re: 4L60E
Ok well internally between them all as far as strength, planetarys, drums, clutches, shafts etc they are all the same. The vr has a different valve body because of pwm but that’s all. The 02 gen3 will have a corvette style servo and that’s the only change there. If you want to be able to ramp in the duty cycle of the converter( if you are using lock up) then choose one of the later ones. The early cases can still take a lot of power and usually Break the internals Or input shaft before doing any case damage.
