So I uploaded a $12P to my Kalmaker, can it be fixed?

Post by Mr DOHC »

Starting a new thread. Since I have been able to use TunerPro with my Kalmaker for a while, I didn’t understand that I needed to do a physical mod to the Kalmaker to get it to take $12P.

So today I connected and hit the upload bottom to find out the car won’t start anymore and I can’t connect to it. What are my options, can I get it out back to and run Kalmaker again or is there some way I can get it to be updated to $12P?

You will have to clear all the data/ blank the NVRAM, and either load a base Kal/ or 12P program.
Someone might chime in whether your existing Kal hardware is compatible with PCM Hacking hardware.

ok so it's just an 808 so it should act like $12p, but you cant load a file over comms that the chip isn't used to...

So like I said in PM a week ago you will most likely need an eraser & programmer but read the FAQ's...

Now we know from pics it doesn't need a UV eraser, just need a programmer so the dallas chip need to be lifted off the board & then upload the $12p file to it & should be all good to start!

'Kalmaker to Tunerpro. for Newby'
Copy and paste into search box.

I found this quote from Antus
“ The custom chip injects data when the chip select line is low (and the memcal would normally be inactive) in to a normally unused memory space to provide something the operating system can look for. As that memory space is normally unused and 12P does not check for it, it will cause no problems if the chip is present or not when running 12P should you somehow put it on that hardware (not recommended) or reading the stock tune over ALDL once a USB interface is installed (recommended) and it can be ignored.”

I don’t understand it all but it sounds like this might be relevant to me

The chip I think Antus is referring to is the security.
It seems there are no problems if switching to 12P with existing hardware.
The general consensus though looks to be to move to the PCM Hacking set-up.

I think, that if i have to upgrade to the PCM board then its probably not worth it in my situation.
While i get that its superior to the Kal, for what i have the Kal is enough and not worth having to source another ECU and then getting the mods done, just for the extra few cell rows (65, 75 etc) and the WB functionality.

If i can resurrect the Kal back it'll be fine and i can reupload the old map and go from there.

I mentioned above, it can be done either way the dallas chip is corrupt now so most likely will need a programmer either way.
Lift dallas chip off board & write the $12p file on it & your away!
