355 Carby to EFI

Post by 355ISO »

Hi guys, Newby here.
Thanks to Glenn Howe for giving me some info and recommending I talk to the experts here
I am after 30yrs going to convert to EFI
I would prefer to do it with OEM components if possible
What would be the best option to convert 355 Holden engine in a HQ.
car has a Harrop manifold, and I would like to keep it and drill the injector bosses.
I plan to use a 4 barrel 1000cfm throttle body.
I have a spare dizzy from a VT5.0.
question is will a VT ECU AND LOOM work and handle 630fwhp and have some ignition control. Currently engine only needs 8 degrees in the distributor.
Cheers
ISO

Well you came to the right place. The guys here know heaps and don't hold back with the help. I can't help with your manifold selection but highly recommend the 12P program for your tuning needs. Its a great program written by VL400 who has an extensive knowledge of the Delco GM program. Good luck and enjoy.

Hi ISO there are a lot more experienced members than me who will offer help but the On a basic level the VT is sequential and takes a lot more expertise to setup and execute where the VN setup is batch fired and reasonably easy to install and configure.

I agree with heff0018. Using the VT distributor as a 'build around' only paints you into a corner.
Harder to find VT PCM's compared to the '808. More complexity too.
If you're going for the bigger horsepower, the MAF (mass air flow) system will only be a hindrance.
You should be able to re-work that distributor for the early non sequential system anyway.
You have placed timing control high on your priority list, the TunerPro set-up will give you ample scope. The maps cover the full range of RPM and vacuum/ load points you will need.
Set yourself up with the 8192 Baud converter on an 1227808 (or if you can find an 16183082 or 16206305 they will have the higher Baud rate), Real Time Board and NVRAM here: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3612
USB Comms board link: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3613 and download the $12P files: download/file.php?id=9900
Check out the "Getting Started Guide": viewtopic.php?f=7&t=655 for all the questions you will likely have answered.
There is also the FAQ (frequently asked questions) green button on the top right of screen.
There are a lot of fiddly bits like high pressure electric fuel pump (in tank or stand alone/ external), fuel return line, sensors such as TPS, IAC, MAP, CTS, MAT , finding a good place to mount your ECM etc.

the VT dizzy should be fine, you just don't need to use the secondary trigger in it - theres two trigger wheels - one with 8 teeth the same as earlier models is the one you need for using pre MAF ecu.

i would aim to find a VN/VP/VR V8 loom and ignition module ... auto VR V8 will be a different ecu but still works fine for using MAP sensor, it also has the ability to drive a 4L60E if you wanted to, but if you dont need that, the VN/VP V8 ECU/loom or VR V8 Manual....

aside from getting all the sensors and wiring it up theres not too much more to it ... other than a good tune.

also depending on what dizzy you have in it now you may even be able to adapt that to work with the delco.

you wont look back once you get it all happening!

Agree, like on Glenn's HQ an VN-VP loom with 808 loaded up with 12P is the way to go.

You will need a throttle body with GM type IAC and TPS to make it easiest and a USB comms board for the ECU plus a wide band sensor and controlled. I like to use the 14Point7 controllers with genuine Bosch sensors from Gareth on this forum. Actually pretty sure he can supply all the gear you need.

Where abouts are you based?
I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.

You can buy special drill bits that do all the steps necessary to allow for your injector fitting.
The problem is, you would need to set up a jig, as the injectors are set at an angle.
It would probably be more cost effective to have an engine shop do it for you.

My Torana is a 355 with early heads running 12P on an 808 with VN/VP engine loom, four barrel throttle body and custom fuel rails/modified manifold
