memcal contents copied 12p/11p for base tune?

Post by AnR »

Hello all, my first post here after lurking on and off for around 10 years...

i have a new to me 94 vr wagon project, its ecm 16195699

i am looking to use my vnS1 buick v6 engine running the vr 4l60e and vr loom, if i need to i can run my th700-r4 instead

the vn's original memcal was a ATFY4410, am i correct in saying i would be able to copy as much of the $5D ATFY4410 vn bin contents from memcalID tool into a 11p v104 CAKH bin?
would that give me a close enough base tune to start the car and tune from there or am i totally over/underthinking it

Cheers AnR

EDIT: answered below: motor is 1.5 version not the original 1 with different spark maps

I think the 11P base program is just a std VR one and that should work out of the box. Start there and tune. Just a thought it may require you to fit a 512 memcal. I use flash chips to speed up the burning process.

the 11p is standard vr, but from a old quote from antus in a unrelated thread on 12p he said this which is what sparked my original question
antus wrote:Yeah 12P works on all models VN-VP and VR manual out of the box with factory engine/trans combinations. There is also the APNX bin in the 12P zip for the series 1 which has quite different spark maps. The 1.5 and above all work well with the BLCD base for manual and auto and then you get the evolution of the code and maps GM made up to the VR for that engine, and then you have BLCF for the V8s.

I am not completely sure when the series 1 to 1.5 cutover happed but from https://pcmhacking.net/memcals.html we see APNX was a 1988 release with a "backfire fix" over the original calibration, and your ATFY is 1989 "Production Run Change for 1990 Eng". I am pretty sure that means your engine is series 1.5 or above, and thus good for the latest update which is the CAKH bin - the most recent VR tune from 1995.
Have you read the FAQ? For lots of information and links to significant threads see here: http://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1396

If your engine is the LN3 with the thermostat at the rear, use the cal out of APNX, if it's it's at the front (L27), use 11P v6 tune and add 2-3% to the spark table.
I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.
