How to run a 4L60E?

Post by h4x0r »

I've been running a 424 for years on a 304. I recently added a matching 12 pin 4HBD 4L60E.

So far the auto will only start in 3rd gear or manually shift down to 2nd or manually back to 3rd. There is no automatic functioning and I can't manually select first.

I use live tuning and can see the gear selection ok from PRND321

I believe im stuck in a diagnostic mode. There are no engine or transmission errors logged.

Do I need to reprogram my bin?

try putting a stock 11P bin on it and see if the trans works then. If it does, then compare your tune and the 11P tune. If it doesnt, look at the wiring or be sus of the transmission.

Yes, most likely need to reprogram the bin.
I imagine it has all the codes for a 4L60E disabled to run the trimatic so I’d not running any of the 4L60E code and no trouble code’s showing as they have all been disabled.
Do a compare with a stock 11P tune and turn back on all the transmission parameters that have been disabled.

The 4L60E was rebuilt before installing it. Meant to have all new sensors, electronics etc.

I haven't wired up the 4L60E VSS (speed sensor) either because I'm still using a GPS sender.

Maybe I need to check all my wiring

Hiya,
I don't know how all the stuff is in australia, over here if I used a '95 350 4l60e truck chip in a '94 350 4l60e truck, it would set all the quad driver codes. It's been quite a while but I later learned that the torque convertor engagement was PWM in '95. I am not sure that helps but maybe give you a direction.

I think the quad driver fault is normal like that from factory. I dont have a VY though and when I was looking at these models it was just a pcm on the bench so you'll probably want to verify with someone who knows the VY better. Have you tested to see if its working now like that? If the fault is normal, it may be.

I believe I have a 94 VR combo. Its fitted in a Torana.

I went for a test drive and its the same symptoms. Will take off in 3rd gear or 2nd only if shifted down. Will not force down to 1st or 4th.

I checked to see if I connected the plug on the auto correctly but it seems to only go on one way. And other data like temperature, slippage and gear selection seems correct.
