I also solved my other issue of the extra change I didn't want to commit, I forgot to stage the change that I did want to commit and had just done 'commit all'. Reverted my initial commit and did it correctly and made a pull request.

We could put it in .gitignore but then we wouldnt be able to commit it if we change project settings. I generally do a git status and git diff before I commit my work so I can check on it, and then I usually git add the files want to save, or just list them by cutting and pasting from the git status output in the same command as I do the commit. There are many ways to achieve the result, you can use whatever tools or method you find best for you.
