PCM Hammer 98/99 Black Box Support

Post by antus »

My 98/99 Vortec Black Box PCM arrived last week, and I found some time today to make up a bench harness. I had already added a kernel to pcmhammer for it, so I fired it up and locked out a couple of the 'Get Properties' steps that took to long to fail as this PCM was not responding to them and bingo - the read kernel worked first try! Whoohoo! :typist: :comp: :punk: :driving:

Write, not so happy. The file I read out misdetects as an E54, so something to clean up there in the PC app and then we find out if the write code in the kernel is good or not.

Erase failed, no change on the flash chip. Oh well, this will be the next PCM to add but there is a bit of work to do here yet.

Awesome. I really wish I knew what was different in the hardware between the 96-97 Black Box and the 98-99 Black Box.

96-97 uses 2 intel flash chips at 128kb

98-99 uses 1 intel flash chip at 512kb.

96-97 will likely use totally different write code.
96-97 also have built in mode 35 that allows to read pcm without uploading any code.

Very good Information. When I took this 96 black box apart I did notice the two Intel flash chips. I guess I am wondering if the fact that it has flash chips; does this make it harder to read the entire flash into a single bin, or write a single bin? I tried reading from it and some weird responses were received. I would really like to figure out how to read and write to this thing. Both black boxes are VPW and would be a great addition to PCM Hammer. It would be great if PCM Hammer can read the PCMs speaking VPW from the very beginning of OBD2 which I am sure the black box was at the very beginning with a couple others.

When we looked at your 96/97 the fact it was talking a rather different version of OBD was not a good start. It means there will need to be a bunch of changes just for that 1 PCM variant. The read kernel probably wont need to know which chip its reading from, I expect they'll both be in scope and read transparently in to one image. The 2 flash chips will complicate writing though as the write kernel will need to be able to switch between chips and control VPP to both of them. This is new functionality and breaks the pattern that we have working for all of the rest of the supported PCMs. I'll work on the 98/99 but at this stage it looks like the 96/97 would be quite difficult and not worth the effort.
