Oil Temp Sensor Location? Stock ecotec oil temps?
Re: Oil Temp Sensor Location? Stock ecotec oil temps?
I don't have any sort of display, just allows logging via the ECU. Can program it to do check engine light things too I guess.

I do like a dash gauge, something to look at.
All cars should have oil pressure and voltage on display IMHO.
I could fly a plane before I could drive a car, T's and P's.

100% agree on the point all cars should have oil pressure. Oil temp would be handy but once you know you don't need to monitor it. It stays mostly the same as oil temp comes almost all from the oil pump and bearing oil film and is tied to rpm, coolant has little effect on oil temp. Most well designed engines run about 100c oil temp and that is the ideal temp.
If I had my choice for gauges that should be included, it would be oil pressure, fuel pressure and maybe fuel trim. These are all engine health/protection related info that is very useful. The latter would be helpful for picking up early on fuel system/emissions problems before they happen and driver habit feedback, rather than most cars having several issues that result in poor economy, bad emissions, and performance without any indication, not even a CEL code logged with a lot of cars when you clearly can see and smell how out of whack the fuelling is. Less of an issue with our cars as the Delco is pretty good at letting you know, but I know many cars don't even log a code while pouring black smoke and gassing everyone out in the process for example.

I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.

Re: Oil Temp Sensor Location? Stock ecotec oil temps?
Had a few little chores to do this morning.
After removing the LPG from the VT I had to bleed the cooling system but I forgot I was running the stock tune and managed to boil the thing
Put in a new tune this morning with lower thermofan settings and let it run up to check both fans work and check for leaks on all my fittings from yesterday.
Then I figured I might as well temporarily wire up the gauges and test the sensors. that's the old gauge cluster from the VN ( I do miss that car). The car has been idling for a good 25 minutes and the thermo fans have cycled 3 or 4 times including pulling the low speed fan relay so it could get hot to test the high speed fan. This is a 15w-50 Penrite diesel oil. It's got a lot of idle oil pressure considering I know the oil pressure bypass spring is a few MM shorter than it should be.
Let it idle for ages and even sat and revved it for a bit to 2500rpm, stopped and started a few times and moved my temporary wiring around a bit so I could close the door and bonnet.
Well at least I now know it's got plenty of oil pressure, probably to much really. I think it'll like going to a 15w-40.
I wonder how much difference that alloy sump makes to the engine oil temp?
Outside ambient air temp is about 16°C

Absolutely - I do have a gauge for pressure, just not oil temp. Both pressure and temp go to the ECU.immortality wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 9:39 pm I do like a dash gauge, something to look at.

I'm on a stock computer so only have 2 spare inputs to work with, one will be the WB O2, I might log fuel pressure with the other as that is vital when tuning.

I would also suggest that on each oil change that you empty the plug and maybe give it a hose down with brakleen.
Around the sensor is somewhere that could build up with crud over extended changes. No issues if kept clean though.

Double checked, the oil is a Penrite 15w-50 mineral oil. I'll correct my earlier post
I'll keep an eye on it

The reality of oil viscosity and temperature is that at 100 deg C there is little difference between a 30 or 40. They end up around 12 and it's really the cold temp low viscosity where there is advantages.
