Just ran across this yesterday - found the old thread at mhhauto when my Techline account got locked last month. I had another TCM I wanted to reflash for a spare so changed the serial and mac address on mine over the weekend and begged to have my account unlocked.

Long story short, if you need to use Techline don't bother trying to change the serial #. My account was locked again after connecting to read the vin. They must have a database of the valid MDI serial #s, or some other method of identifying the clones.

BTW: the uart is RS232 standard signaling so a cheap TTL usb serial adapter wont work.

Ive just got a couple of adapters that have arrived to try make a cable to interface with the mdi, ive just been using my autel vcmi or openport when using techline for now, but damn they are slow compared to the mdi clone. Thinking of making a dummy account to try when I figure out how to change the details.

Rang my local GM dealer to enquire about buying a genuine mdi2 but they refuse to order one in for me as techline is not allowed to be accessed by the public in my country - we have no right to repair laws at all so even basic service info is not available.

GM can't sell you an MDI2 if they wanted to, they had some sort of falling out with Bosch. Even working at a GM dealer I have to go to Bosch directly. GM sent an email out stating this. I can tell you that I just ordered one thru the email, email to set up the purchase and then called in the card details. Price is a bit fuzzy since they stated one price, invoice said another price, yet the card was dinged for a different price.. I'll see what it ends up being, not supposed to see it for another 10 days or so. Sounds like they are using the gm parts model of just in time production, wait until you have a bunch, then crank out the assembly line. Can't have any sitting on the shelf.

MDI2 Scan Tool Ordering Update

The MDI2 Scan Tool is orderable by contacting Bosch at https://gmmdi.service-solutions.com/ or by contacting Bosch directly at KM@service-solutions.com.
The MDI2 is NOT orderable by contacting Snap-on on the new GMGlobaltools.com website. The MDI2 is developed and sourced through Bosch.
For service or questions regarding an MDI2 please contact Bosch at KM@service-solutions.com.

Yes, that is Bosch.. Yup the price of $735.70 is what it said on the invoice but I was quoted $790.70. And finally my card was dinged for $850ish.. I guess some of that is a pre-auth which will 'fall off' plus a tax which I shouldn't have to pay so I'll have to wait and see what the final bill is..
