Edit: Tried a second read and it went, but by 10% it was over 20 retries and was looking like it was going to take a half an hour and I didn't have that long to wait around. Can re-engage that tonight to see if I can get a successful read.

This blackbox has the same OS as in your original post, it is a 4 plug unit in a 99 Chevy K2500. Here's the properties.

[10:59:27:421] VIN: 1GCGK23J3XF025507
[10:59:27:468] OSID: 9365085
[10:59:27:484] Description: Vortec Black Box 98-02, 4 Plug, Service No 16263494
[10:59:27:516] Hardware ID: 872429914
[10:59:27:579] Broad Cast Code: CMUH
[10:59:27:623] MEC: 0

Using that version I tried a read of the blackbox and got this:

Yeah the scantool devices are pretty rubbish. They are a very slow protocol and also don't support 4x speed. I would like to drop support for them, but I guess slow is better than not at all and it should keep working if we just leave the code in there.

I've been occasionally getting that same Object reference error during crc checks, restarting my laptop usually solves it for a while so I can get a few reads/writes before it starts throwing the error again.

What adapter do u use ? Maybe its because energy savings features cuz laptops has a lot of by default ?
I use PC and power supply to PCM from MOLEX 12V -works excellent with P01-P59
