OBDX Pro VX - which app?

Post by turbo_bu »

Picked up the OBDX Pro VX adapter to use with PCM Hammer, but would also like to find an app where I can use it as a quick scanner tool for my other cars. In the past, everyone recommends using the Torque app. When I went to download it, it appears that they are now going with a subscription based service ($$$ each month). I don't mind paying for an app (reasonable cost), but don't want a monthly fee just to use it.

What app(s) are you guys using? Main goal is DTC codes, and viewing PID's.

You may have been looking at the wrong app, I'm not aware of Torque Pro changing to a subscription service and I use it pretty regularly.

It's like a $4 or $5 one-time app purchase

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... owl.torque here's the playstore link to it just in case it's helpful

Interesting. I tried the link, but it tells me that it won't work with my phone since it was written for an older version of Android??? Which version of Android are you running with this version of Torque?

Unfortunately, looks like I am on Android 15. Wonder if there is another workaround.

Or if there is another app to try.

Looking into this further, it looks like most of the free apps only get you a few PIDS. Some offer add ons that you can buy which might get you some manufacturer PIDS. unfortunately they don't tell you which ones that you get for your money. Is there a better app which supports users entering in the specific PID address? Or does anyone have a preferred app which supports a fairly complete set of GM enhanced PIDS?

Have a look at Car Scanner. It's in Google play.

I just saw this video mentioned on the lsdroid group. Best how to I've seen so for the logger in pcmhammer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgtXXMo6KNo

Antus, thanks for the link. It was a good video on how to setup logging data. I have also grabbed a copy of Car Scanner and it seems to work with the VX adapter. One thing I was trying to get working was reading GM PIDS. Specifically, one that I tried was transmission temperature since when changing fluid your supposed to check the level only after a certain temperature had been reached. I know the pid, and found an area where you could configure car scanner with a custom PID, then had a problem with how to get it to display. They have a formula section, but I want able to get it to convert the hex and show a value. Interestingly enough, if I use the terminal feature and manually key in the steps, I can get what appears to be a proper hex value out. Would be nice to get the app to show it directly.

Playing some more with the app. Just trying to get it to read the voltage using PID 1141. Just using their custom sensor option, I get a response of 12BC. Not right. But if I manually request mode 22 using the built in terminal feature, I get 781D, which I believe converts to 12.01 volts (correct).

Anyone successfully gotten the custom PID to work with Car Scanner?
