Regarding the NVRAM info as I have said I haven't ever used one so at this stage would only get confused. I use 512 flash chips and ofset the write by 8000 and have never had a problem apart from the occasional write error caused by a bad connection with the Eprom reader. Regarding the ECU's thay will all 808's will work with 12P because they are all the same no matter what car they come out of except the VR/VS which the only difference is they have high speed coms and output the data on a different pin. The difference is in the Eprom. Anyway weekend coming up so you might have some time to look and think some more.
That's good to know as I have a couple of spare ECU's at home that I can try.

Sorry this one's a bit beyond me.

What could that be caused by? Bad coil, ignition module, wiring, HT Leads.
Could that explain why the timing light is not picking up the ignition pulse?

Another thing that puzzles me is why the plugs are not wet after prolonged cranking and not firing?

I reckon there are still multiple problems, both fuel and ignition.

And thanks for all your help so far, I have certainly learnt a lot.

Hi all, I put the memcal with the burnt bin file into a spare ECU And plugged it in but no difference.

I discovered the new coil is cooked, I put the old one back in and now get constant pulsing through the timing light. Timing is spot on 10 degrees BTC in diagnostic mode.

It will fire on a dose of starting fluid but I can't get it to idle on starting fluid anymore which is strange. If I try and add starting fluid when its running it backfires.

I attached a log file, is there anything that might provide hint of why this engine is not getting fuel.

Thanks

Have you gone back using the NVram? The reason I ask is it shows a 4 cyl memcal detected. It's either that or your using a 4 cyl memcal but I'm sure it showed a 6 cyl in your last log that's why I ask did you swap it back. I'm also thinking with all this cranking it may have washed the oil from the rings. That being the case a couple of squirts of oil down each plug hole is needed to restore compression. All the data is changing once it tries to fire so my guesse is once it does start running they should all read OK.

Thanks Charles, yes that log was using the NVRAM.

Good point re the rings. I should have thought of that.

Its alive! Like a plane crash its usually a combination of problems that brings you undone.
In the end it was something as stupid as no fuel in the tank. I must have chewed up 15 odd litres trying to start this thing over the last couple of months.
The first problem was the Crane CDI not firing.
I thought I was doing the right thing in buying a new stock coil from Repco which ended up being defective.
In my defence it was giving out enough spark to light up an inline spark tester but the signal wasn't enough to trigger the timing light.
Someone with more experience would have been able to diagnose that the coil was bad but just for a test I put in my old factory coil and the timing light got a good signal.
I checked the timing at 10 bdc and all good so it had to be fuel.
I had checked the fuel delivery on cranking a while back and it was spot on but this morning i Pulled the return line off the regulator and no fuel.
I tapped the bottom of the fuel tank and you could hear it was empty. 20 litres of fuel and it fired into life.
What a reflief.

The return spring needs some adjustment and that's why its idling high.

I took it for a drive and holy crap I forgot how much this turbo engine pulls.

The FAn Params -High Speed fan On coolant threshold is set at 99.5 deg which is the same as 12P. Seems high to me. Is this for a second (air con) fan? It appears both my thermo fans are through this setting. (towards the end of te ' first drive' log I notice High Speed Fan is off until the coolant temp hits 99.5 then High Speed shows On)

I found MAlf 13 Coolant threshold 85.25 which sounds way more appropriate. Is this the setting for the main fan? If so what pin is that off the ECU? I should set up the twin fans independently.

Logs show error 35 & 36, looks like I have a vacuum leak which explains why the idle was a bit erratic

The wideband readings are interesting, I wouldn't have thought it would have idled at such a lean AFR but it does. Richens up ok under acceleration.

Thanks

Well this is great news!
I think if we all were honest we have done something similar. I know I have. WB ute - Gauge said 1/4 tank but no fuel. Took me far too long to work it out. When I finally figured it out, my mate said to me always remember when you hear the galloping of hooves, think horses not zebras. Its a good moto.

Cheers and thanks for your help. I feel better that there is a fresh bin file supporting the tune.

On a positive note my knowledge of fuel injection and getting around the NVRAM etc has improved significantly in the past couple of months and this wouldn’t have happened without these problems.

Great to hear. My question is where is the 20L of fuel? Might be wise to change the oil before you give it a flogging.
Tip for next time. The pump will get noisy as you run low on fuel and it starts to cavitate.

Yeah the fuel got me once too, used some 15-20L trying to start and get my VP to idle for the first time, but it ran like crap, backfired and always flooded and fouled the plugs with each start. Turned out this is when I first found and wrote about the Min cranking BPW scalar and how it should be lowered for anyone running larger injectors, it completely overrides all cranking tables min values. I never though a bunch of failed starts would empty the whole tank but it did! Must have been dumping a shit ton of fuel into the cylinders! This all happened within a few hours on the same day, not over weeks or months.
I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.

Cheers, yes you can smell the fuel in the oil and I will be changing out, coolant, engine oil and brake fluid first up.
